The UPEI Panthers have begun their season 2-0 after taking

both games from visiting UNB

over the weekend.

The first 65 minutes belonged to the Panthers who scored just 8:24 into the game on Martha McCardle's first of the sea- son.

Panthers to start two rookies.

"We're happy that our rook- ies were able to go in and play at the required level that we needed them to," said UPEI co-coach Tracy McGee.

The Panthers now have almost two weeks off, time they can use to mend their injuries.

"We need to take care of some lingering issues, injuries, and work on some conditioning. The skills are there we just have to refine them," said Parker.

The Reds now find them- selves 0-2 to start the season, but UNB coach Sherry Doiron remains confident in her team's philosophy.

"Once you set a game plan, if you set the right game plan then you need to follow it because it is the right thing to do. You need to try to be consistent."

And Doiron is not ready to write-off the season after just two games.

"I don"t think anything is too big, not in this league. That's what happened (losing two games to start the season) and we have to build on it from that," she said.

The game's first half was dominated by UPEI, with the Reds only able to attack in spurts.

McCardle's goal was set up by Susan Brown, who centred a pass from the deep right side in a goalmouth scramble. McCardle never hesitated, one-timing it past goalkeeper Kate Betts-Wilmott. Following the goal, UNB was unable to mount much more than a small charge before the Panthers —

regained control.

The second half unfolded much the same way, with the Panthers leading the charge for the most part. Until the last 10 min- utes.

Panther goaltender Ambyr Gallant was virtually untested until that time. UNB came close to tying the game by keeping constant pressure on a fatigued UPEI team.

Gallant made several key saves in the dying minutes, pre- serving the win.

Katie Lee was voted player of the game for the Panthers and Sonya Cameron was player of the game for UNB.

The next game for both teams is October third at UNB were the Reds will try to improve to 1-2 and the panthers will try to begin 3-0.
