The child was picke d up and carried into his father's residence, Garden Street, and» Dr. Holden summoned. An examination showed that the -— injury the child received was a broken eg.

iit i. Ix Montreal Moaday, Judge Davidsecn rendered judgment in the libel case of Donald Dowrie against the Star, dismissing it. He said that in the absence of malice courts of justice were weary of putting leyal handcuffs npon publishers wien reporting jadicial pro- ceedings. As no malice had been shown in the present case, and inasmuch as the facts as reported had been proved to be substantially correct, the case was therefore dismissed.

At a meeting of citizens, held on Monday afternoon last to consider the most feasible way of wiping off the accumulated debt for the ornamentation of Queen Square, the ladies present very kindly volunteered to form them. selves into committees for the purpose of can- vassing the city for subscriptions; and also decided to meet again on Friday morning next, the 2!st inst., at half-past eleven, in the Legislative Library, to organize and to divide the town into collecting districts, when other ladies who were not then present and who wish to assist are cordially invited to attend.

Rosemary Cortace, at Shediac Cape,with barn and other outbuildings, was totally de- stroyed by fire this morning. The fire was discovered about 5 o'clock, in the barn, and spread rapidly. The property has not been occupied except occasionally. for some time. Yesterday two young men of the Gilbert family drove over from Dorchester on some business, putting their horse in the barn and occupying the house for the night. Our informant had not learned how the fire oc- curred. The horse and carriage were burned im the barn. It is not known that there was any insurance.--AMoncton Times.

A Ghasily Find.

GLOUCESTER, Mass., Oct. 18.

The schooner Herman arrived from the Grand Banks to-day. Captain Dawson reports that on Sept. 30th he fel in with the French fishing sloop St. Pierre, of St. Pierre, Mig., in lat. 44.20, lon. 52.20. water-logged. He boarded her and tound ten men drowned in the cabin. The weathe being very ro igh he was unabe to do anything rescue the bodies.

The Glasgow Exhibition.

It is understood that the Government will not act oificially with regard to the Glasgow Exhibition next year. The cir- culars are, however, being extensively cir- culated, so that any manufacturers desiring to take advantage of this opportunity may have the fullest information on the subject.

The Memorial Stone Laid.

Prince Albert Victor laid the memorial stone of the infirmary at Northampton to-day. The streets were crowded, and many persons greeted the speakers with groans. A number of black flags were earried. Cries of ** Hurrah for Bradlaugh,” were heard.
