Happy Jack Squirrel was a sail- o'r. and he didn't want to be a sailor. He was on a log "::itlng out across green mead e. which were covered deep with water. He was all alone on that old log. He was alone and fright- ened. Had he had someone else on that log with him. he would have been less frightened. Shar- ing trouble somehow always mak- es it easier to bear. There is no real reason why it should, but it does.
Happy Jack had been living in a tree in the Green Forest near the edge of the Green Meadows. He had built a nest of sticks and leaves up in that tree for his summer home. When the rain had begun after the long drought. Hap- py Jacky had made himself com- fortable inside his nice smug home. It was :0 well-built that
