The Blue Bombers Again

ONCE again Blue Bombers are the Grey Cup (hampions.

Saturday and Sunday, Bud Grant‘s cripples managed to eke out a 28-27 triump over the heavy favorites, Hamilton Tigen Cats. That was the score when fog chased everybody. including the players. home Saturday. and it didn’t change one bit after the completion of nine minutes and 29 seconds of plalv Sunday.

The Tiger-Cats managed to have the better of the play in those minutes on Sunday but they couldn’t get a touchdown. couldn‘t get a field goal. nor could they come up with a single which would have sent the game into overtime.

PENALTIES surely killed the Hamilton club. especIally on Sunday when they definitely were running out ime. Those ‘no yards‘ infractions were really stupid and in our opinion cost Trimble and his boys the Grey Cup.

Don Sutherin‘s kicking for the extra points after the touch- downs and for the field goal attempts were far from brilliant. These were the main weaknesses the Tiger-Cats displayed against a group of westerners that refused to concede one thing.

We thought the Bombers‘ ability to move the ball on second down was a great factor in their narrow success. Vry n_ Winnipeg was held to small yardage on first down situations but usually Hal Ledvard and Kenny Pleon were able to take suc- cessfully to the air on second w a d get yardage enough to nick up the first down. This ability saved Winnipeg from giv- ing up the ball and thereby giving Hamilton a chance to start any kind of a victory march.

However. it's easy to stay at home and criticise and we know we surely wouldn't have wanted to be in Halter's place Saturday,

Toronto’s veteran sportswriter. Ted Reeve. interviewed Sat- urday. made no attempt to conceal his displeasure at the game being called. Reeve felt the players could still see the ball and that’s what. mattered. Players themselves agreed with Reeve when reporters got to him after the action on Saturday.

Bllt Halter was hard pressed for a decision and he made the one that naturally he thought was best He surely couldn't have cnioycd one minute of the action that memorable Decem- hel afternoon.

Eagle-s Look Weak

RCAF Eagles are having their troubles in \this Island Senior Hockey League.

The cruclest blow yet was dealt them Sunday by thei neighbors. Prince County Combines. who went right into the air base and crushed them 8-3.

In the early moments of the game. the Eagles assumed a 2-0 lead and naturally the supporters of the Airmen were think- ing in terms of the first taste of victory. However, the Eagles had little left after this and Combines came on to score eight goals with only one answer from the Eagles.

It would seem that Eagles need additional strength to com- pete in the loop. This is in no way in criticsm of the club which gives its best every performance. However. the facts are there. They haven‘t won a decsion and they were able to do no than1 grab a draw with Penguins in their first home game.

Perhaps after the New Year. the Airmen will have some new faces dot their lineup. We hope so and we also hope if the no - tacos are there. they’ll be able to cause plenty of trouble ~ the other three teams.
