Key base metal issues began to climb from early weakness in mid- session and extended their gains as the session progressed. Activity was comparatively dull and gains small.

Consolidated Smelters liited 34 at 97 1-4 and Quemont ' ’ 1-2 at 13 3-4. Waite Amulet, and Lab- rador were up five cents and Steep Rock, Golden Manitou, United.‘ Keno Hill and International Uran- ium tightened.

Activity ln the golds was con- fined to s few small issues that turned strongly for small changes. Arjon traded some 81,000 shares for a two cent advance and Duvay turned over 179,000 shares for a slight advance.

Senior producers backed down and juniors showed losses ranging. up to 25 cents. _

Western oils were forced lower in mid-session as almost every is- sue trading declined. Anglo-Cane- dian, Central Leduc, Atlantic Oil and Pacific Petroleum lost five cents while Foothills dipped 10 cents at $2.70.

At Montreal

MONTREAL, May 17—(CP)—In- dustrial trading continued in a quiet vein_on the Montreal stock exchange and curb market today as trends were indefinite. Mines tailed to establish any definite groove as trading remained light.

Industrial sales were approxi- mately the same as yesterday with n turnover of 25.800 shares. Mines totalled only 63,700 shares as com- pared with 85300 shares for the previous session.

Closing averages revealed banks off .03 at 27.71; utilities up -.2 at 72.5; industrials up .2 at 119.6; pa- pers off 1.08 at 289.73 and golds were down .61 at 64.85.

Of 175 issues traded on the two Montreal markets today 55 were higher, Slqowcr and 63 unchanged. Three MW highs and six new lows were established.

Beverages continued on a frac- tional uptrend while papers, me- tals and utilities were mixed and oils were slightly shaded.

Sick‘s Brewery featured a nar- row beverage list. hitting a new high of 18 1-2, up 1-2 over the previous day. Other gainers were sfiflBrams and National Breweries. Canadian Breweries was shaded at 20 7-8. _

Pflpers showed Donnscona down a point while Consolidated Paper; Brown, and Price posted minor losses. Ground gainers were Bath- urst, Brazil, Fraser and Howard Smith.
