The trial of Lord Mayor Sullivan and Wm. ©’ Brien for publishing in their papers reports of the meetings of the suppressed branches of the National League was open- ed at the Mansion House Court this after- noon. The Lord Mayor was driven to the court in a carriage, followed by John Dillon, M. P., ex-Lord Mayors E Dwyer Giray and Charles Dawson, ex-Sheriff Me- Donald and others. The City Marshal §

civic dignitaries, who were arrayed in full othice, Mr. O’Brien joined the procession soon after it started and pro- ceeded to the court. The streets through which the procession passed were thronged. Policemen wandered through the crowd, and «a cordon of police surrounded the Mansion House and prevented the multi- tude from approaching the court room. After the case was called, a warm dispute occurred between the police attendants in court, Mr. Sexton andthe High Sheriff, arising from a desire of the latter to place the city sword aud mace before the magis- trate. The police attempted to prevent the placing of the civic emblems on the table, whereupon Sexton and other munici- pal officers seized the sword and attempted to place it there by force. The police and municipal officers struggled for possession of the sword, while the spectators in

the gallery cheered Sexton and exhorted him to ‘‘hold on.” After a few

minutes beth sides desisted, and after a parley a compromise was effected—the sword being placed on the Magistrate’s bench. When quiet was restored the case of Sullivan was proceeded with. After hearing the evidence the court dismissed the case on the ground that the Crown had not proved that the meeting reported in the Nution was a meeting of a suppressed branch of the National League. The spectators and crowd outside the court were wildly enthusiastic over the decision. The case of Mr. © Brien will be called to- morrow. Dusty, Oct. 6.

Callinan, who turned Quesn’s evidence against his confederates in the murder of Constable Whelan, in his testimony to-day at Ennis, not only declared he had been an informer for six years past, but said that all his expenses had been paid by the govern- ment.

The Presbyterian Synod,

New Grascow, Oct. 6.

The Synod last night continued the dis- cussion regarding the appointment of 4 fourth missionary to the New Hebrides and the session did not adjourn until Jate in the night, so that the matter might be closed. The vote stood for Dr. Burns’ amendment that a missionary be appointed 52 against 81. The vote on Mr. Sevtt’s original motion that the church do not incur the responsibility, was adopted bya majority of 24.

The morning session was devoted to re- ceiving reports. The management of the McLaggon Institute was first taken up. The management of the ladies college re- ported 140 pupils in attendance. It was recommended by Rev. L. G. MeNeill, af St. John, for the committee on reception of Ministers that Rey. John Hutchinson, a minister of the Church of Scotland, be re- ceived into the Church.—Adcpted. The place of next sitting was fixed for Zion Church, Charlottetown.
