Stella. impatiently twisting one dial alter the other. in a vain ef- fort to get a clear connection with Baton Rouge. felt as if the grating and craokling caused by the static constituted the last straw in the bothersome burdens of the day. She was just about ready to throw the instrument across the floor when Drew walk- ed into the library. "Why, hello. Stella!" he said amiably. "l didn't know you were in here. Is any- thing wrong? Somehow you don't seem to radiate that calm content- ment I li.ke to see on the counten- ances of my guests."

It was a. relic! to hear Drew talking agreeably to a succession of telephone operators. Was the first operator quite sure that Mr. Bienvenu could not he reached at the Capital? Then. would the second operator please connect him with the Heidelberg Hotel? Since Mr. Bienvenu's room did not answer, Drew said to a third operator, would she be kind enough to have him paged in the lobby? All right. He would leave his number. As soon as Mr. Bienlvenu came in. would she please have him call Mr. Breck- enridge at Splendid: Plantation? It was urgent.

"I'm afraid your boy iriend doesn't have much leisure to sit around doing nothing but wait for a telephone to ring." Drew said. replacing the receiver. "He's probably in a huddle with some of his closest cronies trying to map out a plan of action to fol- low through after Huey dies. Mean-while, let's try the radio again." Under Drew's skillful ministrations, the reception had become clear. "...only members of the family and close friends are at the hospital." the broad- caster was saying unctuously. "All traffic has been detouerd..." The telephone rang sharply. Stella switched off the radio as Drew picked u-p the receiver. "Hello! Oh, hello, Raoul. How's everything going? Listen! I've got a. very discontented guest here at my house. l'm at my wit's end to know what to do with her. I wonder if you couldn't help me out..."

I Stella matched the receiver out of Drew's hand. f'You make me sick and tired," she said savage- ly. "No. I wasn't talking to you. Raoul. I was talking to Drew. Can't you come down tonight? Drew says he'd be glad to have you. I wish you could. but if you really can't, we'd love to have you tomorrow, instead. Only we thought we might come to Baton Rouge tomorrow. Oh. it isn't . .." she turned from the telephone and spoke to Drew again. far less savagely this time. "Raoul says the House has adjourned un- til Wednesday. l'le'1l be free and he'll be glad to come down here then. if that's all right, and have us go up there Wednesday, instead. Here. you'd better talk to him yourself."

The receiver changed hands sev- eral times. The two men spoke briefly together, and to the point. Stella kept breaking in. She want- ed to talk on and on. But she had no choice when Raoul said. rather brusquely, "Listen. couldn't you say all that tomorrow morn- ing just as well? I'm talking from

"Well, that seems to be that. I hope I've .edeemed myself as a host. partially at least. I can see that this old house has too few modern wnvcnienccs though. And I hope you don't mind if I add that perhaps they'll help you to remember that libraries. especially libraries connected with bachelors' bedrooms. should be quiet retreats prrimarily reserved for reading."

Tuesday turned out to be on- other trying day. Raoul tele- phoned very early to say that Huey Long had died about four that morning. and in consequence he could not possibly leave. It was still raining the next morn- ing and no one was in especially good mlrlts on the trip to Baton Rouge. When they finally resch- ed the State House, Raoul was waiting for them by the hostess's desk in the bizorre lobby.

The monthly meeting of the Hampton W. I. was held at the home of Mrs. James Campbell. Monday. March 19th. The meet- ing opened with the Creed, fol- lowed by the reading of the min- utes of last meeting which were approved as read. Roll call was answered by each member telling an Irish joke. Mrs. Warren In- man suggested the Institute sell lunches at a farmers meeting to be held in the hall when roads Improve.

A letter about reviving folk dances and Highland dancing was read, and it was decided to write Mrs. J. S. Macxlnnon about this matter. A letter of-thanks for baby's gift and several mess- ages of thanks for gifts were re- ceived by Institute. 85.00 was voted for Redcron appeal. The sick committee reported four treats taken. The school commit- tee reported I creamer and dust- bans needed.
