MONTREAL (CP)- The results of a strike vote by railway em- ployees were being counted Mon- day night by union officials from coast to coast.

Some 135,000 non-operating em- ployees-those who do not actually run the trains-were eligible to vote, and Monday was the final day in which they could ballot.

Frank I-fall. head of the negoti- ating committee of i4 unions in- volved in the dispute. said the vol- ing was on a local basis and the central office here will not offic- ially know the result until Aug. 11. Earlier. he said that reports indi- cated a "heavy" vote throughout the country."

If the employees vote in favor of a strike, a walkout could be called at any time after the re- sult is announced but further nego- tiations would not be precluded.

SEEK FRINGE BENEFITS

The unions made no wage re- quests in the dispute but demanded "fringe" benefits which the. rail- ways said would cost 360,000,000 a year.

Both Canadian Pacific and Cana- dian National Railways declared they could not grant the demands because of declining revenues.

Prime Minister St. Laurent said last Wednesday Parliament may be called in August if the men

Aluminium lost iii at 06 and Bank of Nova Scotia at 47 was 56 easier.

Banks drifted into softer terri- tory while carriers generally held firm. A narrowly mixed tone ruled the utility section. The remainder of the industrial market leaned forward.

Northwest Power is a sub- sidiary of Quebec Metallurgical Industries and Froblsher Ltd..

The licence will enable North- west Power to proceed with sur- vey and other basic steps in the first stage of s S270.000.000 de- velopment along the British Coi- umbia-Yukon border.

The first phase of the vest pro- ject will be the construction of an 880.000 horsepower hydro-elec- trio and smelting project, 800 miles north of Vancouver.

(C10) announced Monday that membgrs will vote later this week on a wage adjust- ment proposal that would lower their basic pay by 20 per cent.

Louis I-Iorvath, president of the local. said the proposal is "de- signed to improve' Studebakers competitive position and still maintain the union as a model for the automotive industry."

l-lorvath said in a statement:

"The production war between General Motors and Ford has re- sulted in a reduction of the work force of Studebaker from 23,000 to 10,000 hourly rated employees and the work week from 40 hours plus to an average of less than 30 hours."

He said the 20 per cent cut in pay would still leave Studebaker workers with the highest wages in the industry. The basic pay is now 51.01": an hour.
