Who hes a memory well trained. —R,eddy Fox. Roddy Fox is a smart person in many ways. He hes to be in order to live, for there is no one among the Green Forest‘ and Green Meadow folk who is more persisb ently hunted than is Recidy Fox. Ills is hunted with guns and Dogs, and he must constantly watch his step for the cruel treachery of l. steel-jawed trap. No one knows better than does he how important it Is for a young Imx to learn fast, and to remember what is learned. Long ago he discovered that things ‘found out for yourself are longest and best remembered.

He had been giving the smartﬂ ot his children a lesson. He knew that the latter follrvwcd h'm at a. riistanccgthinking he didn't know It, trying to keep his father in sight while keeping unseen him- self. No, he wasn't spying on his father. He was trying to learn tn he aysuccessful hunter like Reddy, and was swiart enough to know that the quickest way to learn was lo follow and watch. In this way he could learn where to hunt and how to hunt. Already he had found out that when he couldn't see Raddy he could follow Reddyki trail with his little black nose. Knowing this Roddy had taken pains to leave an easily fol- lowed trail.

Then this morning he had de. rided it was time the young Fox should learn what water can mean In a Fox. He had led the way to the Bl: River, which he knew Young Roddy never yet had seen. He had run along in the shallow water a little way, then left it and ran along the shore. He had re- heated this several times. then hidden where he could watch what_ the Young Pox would do.

When that easily followed trail

"I went to the water and walked along in it." Reddy explained. "1 went in the water, too, but couldn't. find your scent anywhere until I found it. again on shore. Why couldn't I find it in the water?" asked young Raddy. "Because it wasn't there. Thnt l! Will’ at times water can he the best friend s Fox has," replied Raddy. '-Now thet you have

Out of breath, panting, he stopped for a .minute to rest. It was then that he remdnhered how he had lost his father's trail at the water's edge. It was too far to the Big River, but Laughing ,Brook was near. When he reached tit he ran along in the water for a short distance, leaving it to hide under some ferns on the opposite bank. would the same thing happen when that Dog reached the water that had happened to him at the Big River? 1 It did. The Dog hunted and ‘hunted and yeiped impatiently but he didn't find the trail. The young Fox knew now what Reddy had meant by saying water can he the best friend of a Fox.

West should have felt that the situation was pretty black, since East must have counted on him for more than he was going to produce. Thus. West's actual selection of a heart had little to recommend it. Ife should have led his singleton queen of clubs, in the desperate hope of finding East with the ace rrld getting a ruff.

Obviously, a club ruff would have defeated the contract. since East had l. sure trump trick. On the heart lead, however. South had little difficulty in handling nie problem, and after he had drawn West's one trump, all he had to do was lead a club from dummy and- vshen East ducked. go right in with the king.
