Bunotary —Thieves entered the house of a resident of Lower Spring Park Road one day last week, and stole therefrom a valuable watch. They effected an entrance while the gentleman and his wife were away. As the guilty parties are known to the owner, it would be wellif they made an immedfate return. Otherwise they will likely appear before the His Honor, tho Stipendiary Magistrate shortly.

Tone Atways Reapy.—A telephone mes- sage received in the city this afternoon an- nounces the safe arrival at Oyster Bed Bridge of two well known sportsmen from this city. They report that up to two p. m. they had succeeded in bringing down one black duck, besides a variety of smaller fry. The birds, however, being on the fly, are always ready to go before the sportsmen are ready to fire. The sports- men have, therefore, decided to take re- fuge behind the house inorder to be al- ways ready.

Orrawa, Sept. 6. This was another good day for the Island marksmen. Capt. John A. Longworth won a badge in the Governor-General’s match, and he and Lieutenant Hooper have secured places

The Dominion Rifle Association meeting closed to-day and the states ofticers have completed their returns. |. In the Rideau Mateh Capt. Bishop, of | the 63rd, took first prize and $30, and | Lieut. Hooper and Sapper Anderson, of Charlottetown, third and fourth respect- ively.

In the grand aggregate sixty for bankers prizes first place was taken by Sergt. Hall, of the 79th Shefford Volunteers, who made 287 points. Capt. Ross, of Hamilton, came second.

The Governor-Geueral’s prizes were com- peted for by those who secured places in grand aggregate sixty. The first prize badge and $250 was won by Private Burns, of the 6th Battalion, Montreal. Vorpl. Morris, of Hamilton, took second place, winning $150.

In the Provincial Team Competition for the London Merchants’ Cup, the Ontario team took first place; New Brunswick, se- cond; Manitoba, third; Nova Scotia, fourth; Quebec, fifth.

In the Martini competition, 600 yards, Capt. Stewart, of the 82nd, came in second, winning $15, and Sergt. Davison fifth. Six dollar prizes were taken by Capt. Long- worth and Sapper Longworth.

Among those who have secured places on the Wimbledon team for 1890 Lieut. Hooper, of Charlottetown, has thirteenth place. Among the 40 waiting men, Capt. Longworth, of Charlottetown, is first.

News of the Strike.

Lonpon, Sept. 6.

A gang of dock men yesterday attacked the third officer of the steamer Clair Gra- ham, kicked him until he was insensible, and then rifled his pockets. The outrage was committed out of revenge, the vessel having been loaded by Lascars. :

Burns declares his belief that the strike will be over by Monday. It is estimated that it has already entailed a loss of over £1,500,000.

An increased number of wharf laborers are at work to-day. Burns has consented to atlow men to coal steamers in the West India trade.

The Trades Union Congress to-day unani- mously adopted a resolu ion in favor of a day of eight hours for miners.

Lord Randolph Churchill, speaking at Newtown, said the strike was the natural outcome of the excesses into which em- ployers had fallen in the effort to extract an undue amount ot labor at an inadequate rate of wages.

Asaresult of the conference, the dock directors have agreed to consider the pro- posal for sixpenny rates to begin in Janu- ary next. ‘This term was fixed in order to allow a readjustment of charges to meet the additional outlay. The strikers’ com- mittee consented to advise the men to ac- cept this proposal,

Dynamite [Explosion.

ANTWERP, Sept. 6. Dynamite exploded to-day in a cartridge factory killing several persons and doing

much damage to property. The cart- ridge factory was situated behind the docks upon which a million

cartridges were being loaded and was ad- jacent to petrolenm stores. Two large Russian petroleum warehouses were set on fire and are now burning. Eighty thousand barrels of oil are burning. The loss will be many million francs. Owing to the intense heat the firemen were unable to approach the flames nearer than a hundred yards, and it will be impossible to extinguish the fire in less than 24 hours.
