British Racing Season To Open

LONDON. March 23 --(CF) - Britain opens a new flat-racing season Monday faced with for- midable foreign competition from two directions instead of one.

With nearly 5.000 thoroughbreds set to compete in 2.200 races in a season stretching from March to November. British owners will try to salvage some of their own sil- verware against challenges from France and Ireland.

The big enemy will still be France. which has sent horses across the channel to carry off 10 of the 30 classic British races run since the Second World War. But 3 bigger threat than usual is antic- ipated from Ireland. which plans to send a large string.

The season opens at Lincoln in the north of England and the first big race is the Lincolnshire handicap wcdncsday. a one-mile event which will probably be con- tested by more than 40 The favorite is bookmaker Thompson's Abraham's star.

Curling Club p Prize Bonspiel Opens Tuesday

A prize points bonspiel will be held at the Charlottetown Curling Club opening tomorrow evening and closing Friday. The rinks are representative of the business and professional spheres of club mem- bers.

The second round of the minor league hockey play-oils were con- cluded at the Forum Saturday night when eight games were play- ed under the Department of Phy- sical Fitness Iponso ed program.
