Motor Vehicle Sales Jumped in August

OTTAWA, Oct. 13 -(CP) -- sales of motor vehicles jumped 52 per cent in August. a month in which Canada's retail sales showed their largest increase since April. 1949. the Bureau of Statistics re- ported today. ,

August sales were 13-per ' cent hlgher than in the corresponding month of last year.

in the first eight months of the year the increase in retail sales was almost six per cent.

Among the Provinces. Manitoba had the most pronounced gain - 19 per cent-for August. Aliberla had an increase of 18.5 per cent: British Columbia. 15.3: Ontario, 12.0: Quebec, 11.3: and the Mari- lzmes 6.9.

Retires I-"mi 0. II. It. After Long service

Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Lee of Vor- non left the Province yesterday on a visit to their daughter and friends in Ottawa. Mr. Lee. re- cently retired from the Canadian National Railways in the capacity of chairman of Maintenance of Way for the Atlantic Region. . Mr. In entered the service In 1905 and joined the Brotherhood the following year. He was elected local chairman of the Charlotte- town Lodge in 1918 and was ap- pointed Assistant General chair- man in 1921. In 1937 he was elect- ed to the post he held on retiring from the service.

Mr. Lee was elected as a mem- ber of the Control Committee for Canada in 1928 and was therefore one of ten men who represented all of the Canadian employees in Maintenance of way on all matters pertaining to wages and working conditions.

He was also s. member of the Reherblitntlon committee and was successful in having many incap- acitated men placed in positions whereby they could earn their living with very little manual labour.

1-lis duties had called him to travel- extensively as the head quarters for the Brotherhood are in Detroit, Mich., with a system Office at Ottawa. and being a member of the Gen. Chalrmans Conference was called to Chicago and Washington on business of .the Brotherhood.

He was offered further promot- ion by the organization but as his retiring age had arrived he declin- ed and gave his support to those younger.

He leaves the service with many friends both as Officers and mem- bers of the Union.

Executive Oi Lillie Theatre Guild Meets

Mrs. B. W. Patterson was elect- ed convenor of the Adjud-icsting Committee at the executive meet- ing of the Little Theatre Guild of Charlottetown. held last evening at the home of Miss Lillian Duche- min, Secretary.

Almost a full executive was pre- sent at the lively session, presided over by Mr. H. T. Morris, Presi- dent, and plans for the first pro- duction were discussed in full. it was announced that the report of the 1949-50 adjudicating committee would be given at the perform- ance.

Sale of season tickets was dis- cussed and it was moved that these be on sale at the door. Miss Duchemin read a letter from the Dominion Drama Festival Associa- tion in regard to the new Cana- dian Theaire Magazine they are publishing.

It was also moved that Mr. Reginald King he invited to give his lecture "Footllghts and Grease Paint" on October 21st. Mr. King is a well known actor and drama- tic teacher in the United States, and Mrs. Patterson was elected convenor of the committee in charge of this public lecture.

Following the executive meet- ing. the cast of the current pro- -duction was invited to join with the executive in enjoying refresh- ments graciously provided by Miss Duchemin.'

Plans For Tag Day For Blind Are Completed

Thirteen members of the Char- lottetown Women's Auxiliary of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind met yesterday after- noon at the Charlottetown Hotel to finalize plans for a tag day for the blind. which is to be held in Charlottetown on satur- day, November 4. 1950. Mrs. W.

. P. MaoMillan. president of the Auxiliary, stated that the money raised is for the pu.r- pose ol bringing the services of the C. N. I. B. to the blind of this city. and she exprsed confidence that the public will support this worthy cause.

A report by the Secretary Mrs. S. G. Peppln, and the treasurers report were adoptcd.'and the Aux- iliary president reported on the success of the first annual picnic held for the blind here during the summer. Dutch Ariisi Now Residing Near (2h'lown

Frans Cuppiris of Nljmegsn, Hol- land, paid a visit to the news de- partment of this paper on Friday. Mr. Cuppins. who lived in oc- cupied Holland all through ' the war years, immigrated to Canada with his wife and three children in June of this year, and after landing in Quebec, come directly to this Province where he has been a resident of thisciiy since that time.

Frans is 30 years of age and has had 15 years of training as an artist in making and designing lead and glass-work windows. such as are found in churches and are much used in private homes in his na- tive Holland.

He has come completely equip- ped for carrying out his trade here, and although he has been employed as a carpenter for M. F. Schurman and Company here

all summer, has been carrying on his work during his spare time. His studio is at his place of resid- ence, located on the grounds of Saint Dunstan's .University, and will welcome anyone who wishes to view his craftsmanship.

In his conversation -yesterday, Mr. Cuppirn said that his mother is still living in Nijmegan, but that his father was killed during an air raid there during the war. He stated that in Holland he was told that he should settle in Prince Edward Island, and that he is very glad that he did as "the people are all very nice to me here and the country is beautiful."
