Memorial Service Address

The following is the address by Rev. L. Il- G. Davies at tho unitnd memorial service hold Tuesday in the Presbyterian Church, Sum- mersldc.

Speaking of the universal favor which King George had won for himself since the time of his ac- cession to the throne, m. Davies attributed it to the ‘ human and manLv qualities of his character. His exalted station had never been allowed to stifle the homespun virtues, so admired by Britishers everywhere. Even Bernard Shaw, dramatically picturing an lmgland gone Communist, saw King George as still the most popular man in the laud.

The late monarch was contrast- ed with other‘ English Kings who had borne the same name. Eng- land had not been fortunate in her George"; bu‘; in George V ahe had a King who not. only redeem- ed the name but made lt glorious.

King George came on to the

throne under two handicaps. First he succeeded two illustrious sov- ereigns. Queen Victoria had made herself an institution. In her sixty-one years, her country had become supreme. Her age ou-t- rivalled that oi Elizabeth. King Edward was brilliant as a diplo- ma‘. a statesman, and immensely popular as a King, George V had none of the glamour of Victoria, nor the brilliance of Edward, but he had simplicity and strength of character, togethér with the sag- acity that were so essential in the difficult period oi his reign. In th- second place, he was handi- capped 1n coming to the throne in one of the worst times in Brit- ain's history. Ireland verged on civil war.'Llberal legislation had made a wide cleavage in English social life and political dissensi-n was at its wo.st. Then came war. How he conducted himself through all these things, binding himself to his people by common sacrifice and endurance with them. the world .vell knows. It is because of what he was in himself and what he did for the common cause in the time of crisis that all loyal Brltlshers re- gard his passing as a. personal bereavement-S.

Mr. W. E. MacDonald was ra- elected President at the 35th annual meeting of the Summerslde Board o! Trace. held in the dining room of the Clifton Hotel last evening following an enjoyable dinner.

The urning room was filled with a large and representative attend- ance. Before the members were seated President MacDonald fitting- ly referred to the great loss sus- tained tn the passing cf His late Majesty King uecrge V.

After dinner, a toast to The King was proposed.

This was followed by the Presi- dent's report, which was on motion adopted.

The Railway Committee report was made by Hon. L. R. Allen, the Marine Committee by Mr. J. E. Campbell, who told of the activity in Summerside port during the past season and outlined the need of 1n- creased facilities at the government pier. The strategic importance of Summcrside harbour was emphas- ized. A resolution was moved- call- ing a conference of shippers to out- .ine needs and recommend improve- ments. p

Mr. H. T. Holman reported for the Tourist and Publicity Commit- tee. , The Mall Services Committee report was given by G. M. Muttart. The need of a hangar at the airport was stressed.

L. W. Hancock for the " ‘ ship Committee reported 140 mem- bers and proposed six new mem- bers who were elected, namely, Ray Tanton, J. W. H058. Rev. f... E. G. BS1498. Rev- W- McCleary, John Arthur and T. M. Linkletter.

Mr. Hancock also reported for the Community Music Committee and ,told of the endeavour, to interest ~Summeraide people in the Char-

The Premier of the Province, Hdn. Thane A. Campbell, was greet. ed and introduced by the President.

Hon. Mr. Campbell spoke briefly, emphasizing among other things the value of a national punk in Prince Edward- Island.

Another guest was welcomed in the person of Dr. Goulden of the Dominion Rust Research Laborator- ies in Winnipeg, who told an in- teresting story of the efforts to combat the rust problem and to produce rust resistant varieties of wheat.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Gentlemen cf the Board of ‘Prado: Of peculalr significance is our meeting hem this evening. we have a common bond-a concern for the welfare of Surnmerside. Our object is to review the past year, to aur- vey our activities in the light of the stands-rd set by the public-minded citicens who marked the advent of a new century by organising ,the‘ Sumrnerside Board of 'I‘radc. This was their declaration of purpose, as it is ours: "This association is or- ganized on a non-political and non-partlzarl basis, for the purpose 0f Nmovlflfl existing disabilities, and to promote just and equitable principles of Trade and Commerce in general and the interests of Summer-aide and the Province of Prirlroe Edward Island in particu- ar.

A Board of ‘II-ode, then, is or- ganized for definite performance. Its value, both to its members and to the community, is based upon what it actually accomplishes for the comtituency which it serves. In Board of Trade work there are two brood principles. One is internal and has to do with the economy of the Board itself. The other is ob- jective and relates to the work of tho Board. consisting of definite extension projects for bus‘ ex- pansion and for unity welfare, and constituting the guage by which this. and every Board of Trade is judged by the average memberandbythcpubllcnsa whole.

With all this in mind. your President has no helitatloh or apology in offering this report of our activities for I035.

It is true that- the cervical of the Board were not in the solution of any 1cm of great moment. but every opportunity to beof service was cheerfully and willingly met, often, it is felt. with good affect. To quote a fonnor

Before, however. proceeding to recount the work of the year, it is fitting that we should pause for a moment to think of the loss just sustained in the paming of the Honourable Waiter M. Lea, late Premien of the Province. All must unite to recognize his worth as a Public-minded citizen and to ack- nowledge his contribution to the well-being of the Island.

No less in order are congratula- tions to our new Premier. Surely we may congratulate ourselves, too, that the mantle has fallen upon a member of this Board. It is a par- ticular Jeasure. indeed, to greet this evening, the Honourable Thane A. Cmnbell, Premier of Prince Ed- ward Island, in what I believe is his first public appearance in Sum- merside as such. Yet we may Ieiflrd him, I feel sure, as just one of our- selves.

While on this theme, we must not fail express our congratulations also, Mr. J. J. Morris, a former President of this Board, who has brought distinction to us as ‘well as to himself in being elected as Presl- clent of the Charlottetown Board of Trade. An efficient officer and a good citizen here. it is certain that his uppr ' p in ‘f’ whl serve him in good stead in his new capacity. And now, again to business!

As ls customary,_the President's report is 1n the nature of a general review. Committees, re-allgned after the very successful member- ship drive last Spring. were set up take care of projects which it was felt were beneficial to the com- munlty. In detail their reports will deal with those phases of the year's work in which they were h-n- medlately concerned.

Town Llbrury

Early in the year, the interest of the Board was enlisted in the work of the Town Library Committee and Mt‘. B. W. Robinson was ap- pointed as officia.‘ representative of ‘the Board. With characteristic energy. Mr. Robinson gave his -sup- port to the Committee and it is gratifying to know that the effort to increase interest in the Library has prover-l the Conrmlttees worth. The co-operation of the Town Council, looking towards the pro- vision of adequate accornodation for the library, merits the thanks of the citizens generally. In Fbbru- ary, through the good offices of the Board of Trade, citizens had the opportunity of hearing the Direc- Delnonstration, Miss Nora Bateson, M.A,, outline the needs and possibilities of the library.

"Charter Members’ Night", a new departure, was observed at the April Quarterly Meeting. Emphasis was placed on our thirty-five years of activity and Charter Members were given special invitation to take part in the meeting. on that evening, too, was initia- ted a drive- for new members. This ‘was organized and carried to a very succesrul conclusion under the able leadership of Mr. Lowell Hancock, Chairman of the Membership Com- mittee. 'f.‘he result was a threefold increase in our membership. the largest in the life of the Board. Our May meeting was largely a. celebra- tion of this successful drive and a welcome to the new members pres- ent. In an informal discussi-rr of projects which might be undertaken by the augmented Board. many fine suggestions were made. These have not all been implemented but the year's work has not been en- tlrely unfruitful. Before the summer recess, another meeting was held in June. when an address by Coun- clllor J. M. Nicholson was heard on the subject "Citizenship."

Another new departure, and one which it is hoped may become an annual feature, was the Board of Trade "Outing."

Believing that the interests of the Board of Trade are not confined within the town boundaries and realising that the prosperity of Summer-side rests. in a. large measure. upon the shoulders of those who till the soil and to the well being of whom, in turn, the town is indlspensab . we arranged with the South Bedeque Women's Institute to hold a Board meeting as their guests at Melrose Fain on

the- Anderson property at Fern- wood. About 100 members. their families and friends attended the supper meeting. held in the spacious barn on the premises, the rafters and walls of which were ornamen- ied with flowers and shrubbery. some 25 members of the Institute were hostesses and served tho gathering in an accomplished manner. Rev. Walter McCieary was the special r.

Nineteen ‘Thirty-Five was “A Year of Jubilee." Not only was it the twenty-fifth anniversary of the accession of King George the Fifth, which was fittingly celebrated, but 1t was also the Diamond Jubilee of the Town of Bummerside. Along with other organizations within the 601111011110? the Board of Trade co- operated in making the celebration of this occasion c. worth-while event. r The destruction by fire 1n May. iut. Ind the rebuilding during the Autumn of the Summer-side High School deserves notice. In the new School Summersidc has an educa- tional lnstituticn of which my vwflmlmlty might properly be proud. Adequaiely equipped foi- pmsent needs and future expansion, with a fine Assembly Hail, it is a valuable town asset. The education- al advantages now ’ by Summerslde must be rated highly. As these become better known throughout the County, attendance will increase and we will have a real "Prince County Academy."

AGRICULTURE

Our "Million Acre Ivar-m‘! is also the world's centre of the silver fox industry, and around our ‘shores is o. substan- tial storehouse of wealth in the fisheries. The year 1935 marked a definite and substantial improve- ment in agricultural conditions both in production and markets. The result is a. greater easure of hope and errtuwagement and a much more cheerful outlook for the future. Our provincial newspapers have been publishing various interesting governmental reports and other items regarding the results of last year's operations; Ordinarily, it might not be desirable to quote from these, but I believe the follow- lnlz information may be of interest. The total value of the crop pro- ductlon for the provinces during the veer just closed is estimated at $8,- 387,000

Dairy products are valued at $1,- 515,000 divided about g5 follows: Butter $480,000; Cheese $30,000: Ice Cream 848.000; market and farm milk $957,000. "Garden of the Gulf" Dairy Pro- ducts are unexcelled in quality. all from Tubercular Free cattle,but it is significant that with one exception (Nova. Scotla) the Prince Edward Island decrease in production last year was the greatest in percentage in all Canada. The per-capita. con- sumption of butter in Canada is said to be about 31 pounds, there- fore the total production of Prince Edward Island would not be suf- ficient for the annual requirements _of a city the size of Halifax. There would appear to be a substantial market in our sister provinces for much larger quantities of P.E. Island butter. The total value of the poultry industry of the province ls placed at $600,000, which includes eggs, live and dressed poultry. It may be of interest to you to know that four- fifths of the turkey production on the Island was from Prince County. Livestock products‘ valuation is said to be $6,430,550.

FISHERIES

"Approximately one million dollars is the estimated value of the Island fisheries for last year. Prince County productions was valued at about $225,000. Lobster fishing is still the mmt valuable‘ branch of the industry. ‘but the most interesting factor in recent years is the development of the oyster fishery, which in past years Wk; of prime importance in this district. Our famous Malpeques are known wherever oysters are used, and the future of oyster- farming seems bright, with pros- pects in the near future of adding new lustre to the name "Malpeques" and to the Island generally as o. producer of the highest grade bi- valves.
