Memorial Break-In

Recently, a break-in occurred in the computer lab and some classrooms in Memorial. The vandal(s) sprayed a fire extinguisher containing water into all of the computer terminals and keyboards.

The repairs took two people most of the week to complete. All of the terminals had to be dried out. There was some damage to electrical contacts inside the computers because of some rust in the water. Rusty water is not good for electrical equipment. It caused some corrosion, which has been cleaned and arrested

Any moisture left inside the machines could have caused considerable damage and it is still possible that this event will result in other problems down the road. For now, however, everything that can be done has been done and all of the terminals are operational.

The major problems caused by the break-in had to do with the unavailability of the terminals to the stu- dents. While the repairs were going on, students were delayed from doing assignments. This vandal- ism was not nearly as costly in dollars as the attack against the photo-copiers in Main last year, but it did

cost the university an estimated $600-$700 in time and effort.

Mr. Hancock, the director of Computer services said that he feels that in general U.P.E.I. students are best in North America for looking after equipment and that they have super over last 19 years with computer equipment. Since the students have been so consider- ate in this respect, Mr. Hancock said ‘‘Instead of replacing and repairing equipment the university is able to make more money available for students - that’s our real goal. Mr. Hancock also said that his first inclination was ‘‘not to blame students because they’ve been great over the years.
