Jack Blanchard, Director of Student Services, says not many students are aware of the programs which the department offers them.

To raise the students’ awareness, Mr. Blanchard is planning to produce a brochure which will describe, in depth, the services which are available. This pamphlet should be distributed next winter.

In the meantime, here is a brief overview of the Department of Student Services. The department is located in the Robertson Library Building. The centres which area part of this department are the Health Centre, Chaplaincy Centre, Day Care, First Year Advisement and Residence Manage- ment.

Two new centres are the Learning Assistance Centre and the Resource Centre. The Learning Assistance Centre was organised over the summer and will give students more access to the tutoring, study skills and reading lab programs. Loanne MacKay is in charge of the tutoring service, Suzanne Manovill co-ordinates the reading lab sessions. The Re- source Centre was developed over the summer as well to have students effectively obtain information on national and international graduate and undergraduate universities;

graduate testing programs such as the Low School Admis- sion Test, the Medical College Admission Test and the Veterinary College Admission Test; scholarships and other financial information; and various audio-visual materials in support of academic skills and programs.

Programs which are of special interest to students include counselling, financial aid advisement and student ex- changes. Counsellors Shirley Hudson, Frank Bulger, and Sharon Myers can help with any academic or personal difficulty you are experiencing. Appointments can be made by phoning 566-0423 or by dropping by the department. A financial aid advisor, who works ten hours per week through the department, has applications for Student Loans, helps with Student Loan appeals and answers anyone’s questions about financial matters. A student exchange advisor also works ten hours per week at Student Services to give any information out on various exchange programs.

As mentioned, this was a short description of what Student

Services offers. I would have liked to talk about the other

aspects of the department, such as off-campus housing and liaison officer’s duties, but the brochure will inform you of these services in the winter. Until then, contact Student Services at 566-0423 to make general inquiries about these and other programs.
