Fur prices dipped slightly from August to Sept 1st, according to Falrciiild Marketing Research De- partment prices index. Using the period from 1935 to 1939 as b, basis of 100, present prices are now 138 compared with 139.2 on August 1st and 162.9 a year ago. That was the highest point in the index.

that in outbreaks of the disease 10% of fresh liver in the ration produced [curative results. We have not heard of any symptoms of these diseases in Prince lidwl-ld Island, but ranchers should be on the lookout for it and if it occur: take the proper steps to combat it.

An authority writing on mink states that the Pastel and dark standard Mink seem to have the beet future of any of the types of mink now being raised. The Pas- tel, however, is meeting competi- tion since the trade now offers pastel-dyed China and JG-p mink at a much lower price and the Pal- tel has also had strong competi- tion with the iight-colored wild mink. These light types of wild mink have declined sharply in price within the last six months. Such condition will directly affect the price of the Pastel mink be- cause of the similarity. In conver- sation with George A. Callback a short time ago, he was very strong for the Pastels and no doubt his experience is such that his judg- ment in that direction will be con. sidered authoritative. 1t appears that with any type of mink that is developed in big quantities there is bound to-be a drop in price but surprises occur as In the case of Silverblu which we featured above.

Dr. EE. Wegher of Pullman, Washington, dean of veterinary re- search for many years in the State College at Washington, states that artificial insemination in mink is a subject that merits thoughtful consideration by the fur farming Indus"?- AS yet no successful ct- tempts have been reported because there are certain natural obstacles that seemingly cannot be conven- iently overcome. In the case of certain other species of domestic animals artificial insemination has been eminently successful and this has made it possible to extend tremendously the influence of the more desirable males. The Doctor goes on to show that it is possible to plan a technique that will bring results with artificial insemina- tion.

Howard Sandman of wessau, Wisconsin, describes the requisites 0f a. good pelt whether it be mink or fox as follows - 1. Good qua]. ity and density of fur. 2. Good color both in guard hair and underfur, 3. Pine, silky texture. 4. A degir. able contrast between unclerfur and guard fur. 5. Good size. 6. Prime leather free of blemish, semi-heavy in weight. ‘l. Well handled and properly fleshed pelts to bring out the points previously named. The above points add up to one very important word in the fur industry, namely, character - for a pelt lacking character has nothing. Beauty and ‘character are synonymous in fur. Pelts must have lustre and sheen to give them breath-taking beauty which is so important.

We were delighted to have g letter from our very great friend, W.O. Douglas, Manager of the Hudson's Bay Company's ranch at Bird's Hill, Manitoba. Mr. Douglas spent a year at the Vimy Ranch and was the most apt pupil we ever had. He has been very suc- cessful not only in the production of silver foxes and mink but also with fisher and to some extent with marten. His letter states, "Conditions with us here this year have, on the» whole, been quite sat- isfactory. We have had an excep- tionally hot summer and some of the less fortunate fur farmers have suffered severe losses owing to high temperatures. We were among the more fortunate and have not had e loss of any description from the ranch during the last three months. Our average in mink is very encouraging, We have around a. 4% mark. As a mater of fact it was over 4% when we first made the check. A few casualties before we got them weaned left us just under.

Foxes, not counting blues, we have 3%; counting the blues we have well over 4. Our averages with the blues were, for us, phen- omenal. We had litters of as high as 10, 15, l4, l3. 12 and several 11's. If only we could have done sonic- thing like this when they were at least giving us a fair return of their board money, we should have felt more happy about it. The Marten are much el usual. Bev- eraldidnotproducebutthothree females that did have twelve liv- in; pupa - very nice stuff. Fisher produced very well but this year our average was smaller. Our rec- ords show-that the year following a poor turnout was ~exoeptionally high, so perhaps the coming year may be a repetition.

Sgt. Joe Louis. world heavyweight champ. was awarded the U. S. Legion of Merit four years ago to- day in a ceremony at Fort Hamil- ton, New York. for "exceptional conduct in the performance of out- standing services." Mai-Gen. C. H. Kells, who made the presentation. emphasized that Louis had "enter- tained 2,000,000 soldiers in combat areas as well as in the United States by frequent boxing exhibi- tions which entailed considerable risk to his boxing future."

Arts in 1873. Mr. Doull in his long career engaged in many en- terprises and whatever he turned his hand to he made a success of it.

He was always a great lover of horses and horse racing and was largely instrumental in getting the Sackville and Westmorlsnd Agri- cultural Society to construct a regulation half-mile track. At one time he raised trotting horses and had a stable of eight standard and registered animals Many of his horses established records oi’ speed which would be considered quite good today considering the training and equipment horses rac- ed with then. He was the last man in Sackville to discard the "horse and buggy for the motor car and. was 82 years old before he put his hand to a steering wheel. He con- tinued motoring until his 90th birthday. He was the inventor of‘ a number of gadgets to,the motor car some of which he had patent- eduHe is still mentally alert but handicapped by blindness. His friends everywhere are extending congratulations to him on having reached the century mark.

The news of the passing of Fred D. J. Graham of St. Stephen, N_ B., has just reached us. An oc- currence which we deeply regret. Mr. Graham was one of the lead- ers in harness racing in New Brunswick and at the time of his death was President of the New Brunswick Circuit and the St. Stephen Exhibition. It was largely due to his enthusiasm that horse racing continued in popularity through the years. He was quite a capable starter acting for thirty years in that capacity in Spring- field, Maine. Every good work in his City found him a willing help- er and among other honors bestow- ed upon him was three ferrns as Mayor of St. Stephen. We took an instant liking to Mr. Graham the first time we met him and that friendship continued We will miss the "News" and clippings which he sent from time to time to brighten this column and the kind. cheery words that accom- panied thern_

Horsemen throughout the Mari- times were shocked and deeply grieved by news received early this week that the popular driver Lloyd O'Brien had been killed in an automobile accident near the Foxboro, Mass, track where his stable was racing. He had left the Charlottetown track only a short time previous in high hopes of making a creditable showing at the track where brother Joe had made his first bid io fame in the U. S. A. Lloyd with brothers Claude and Joe got their first les- sons in handling horses from their father Harry O'Brien who bred, raised and trained many of the fastest trotters and pacer! here. He took a great interest In all matters pertaining to the sport and studied shoeing, balancing and training, and even as a boy of nineteen was winning races. Ten years ago he was setting up track records notably with Dude Potemp- kin at Alberton-ZOD 1-2 which‘ still |iands_ More than tonnes-N ago at the Halifax and Charlotte- town Exhibiiions he was piloting winners. After the late war in which he served he resumed rac- ing handling the Dudy Patch Club stable, New Glasgow, with luc- cell. Last season he raced the Dr. J. A. Donahoe horses and was next to iop driver in the Marl- timea. This season he raced the Dr, Donshoe stable mostly at Truro night races. Old Horne Week, Charlottetown and Truro Exhibition, winning n lot of events and further enhancing his repu- tation ea a driver.
