He saw service as a lieutenant with the Carleton and York Regi- ment iii England. Sicily and North Africa before his military career ended when an aiied shell fell short of its mark during the battle of Dundee crossroads.

In 1946 he married Lucille Lind- say of Montreal - a rosy-cheeked woman who refers affectionately tn her husband as "daddy". "father" or "the old boy."
