Although Mr. Robertson is a capable and well traiced horticulturist, he was not satisfied with hie great experience and large s'ores of horicultural Jore, so he a few years ago, sent his son Percy to Nova Scotia Horticultural school at Wolfville, to take a regular course of training at tha’ institution, where he displayed such marked ability and aptitude for horticul

But Mr. Robertson, jr, bad seen enough of Nova Scotia fruit growing to conclude that there was a more promising field for his energies in his native province than Nova Scotia could offer. Mr. Robertsou’- orchard furnished @ preponderaiing pro~ portion of the apple shipments to the British Markets last ‘ali, besides a: enormous qnantity sold for l-laud use and aume to the N-wfoundland traie. But Mr. Robertson’s orchard was not the only one in Kings to belp swell the volume of shipments to Britam. Senator Ferguson’: consignment by the Gaspesia was largely made up of Ben Davis apples grown in that county.

It will be many years before we have had sufficient data for deciding what varieties of fruit are likclyto be the best torus to plant. The outlook for a tre- mendous increase in fruit production points to the need of great discretion ip our choice. The coarser and more cheaply grown sorts may soon be almost unsale able, so it will probably pay best to invest in Varieties of fine appearance, good qual- ityacd long keeyiog character. Now that we have proved that we cap grow apples which are wanted in @reai Britain, a little fostering encouragement by the Government can stimulate fruit and trec= panting, and after care, can be made to greatly hasten our development into 8 gieat fruitexporting country. There are several ways by which thie encouragement cam be given. Many years ago there flourished ip this province a Royal Agri- cultural Society, which received a small sum from the legielature, to be used for promoting agriculture. Part of this sum was offered by the society in prizes in each of the counties forthe best acre plots of Swede turnips. First, second, third aad fourth prizes were cflered; the competition was keenly contested and resulied in a g estly iacreased acreage of ihat root being eown, and improved methods of cultivation introduced. When that time comes they will see to it (hat at+pirants and the emojuments and honors of law medicine to divinity pay for their own education. When that day comcs we shall see a much lessened expediture for education and much grea'- er 2ftectiveness.
