Island Exports.

We are indebted to E. L. Lydiard, Esq., Customs Breker,for the following statement ef exports from King’s and Queen's Coun- ties during the past five menths to all ports,

including those of other parts of Canada :

Trade of Summerside During May.

Ar the port of Summerside during May, 1880, there were imported $28,083 worth ef goods from countries other than Canada, en which duty was paid to the amount e $5,754.86. Last year the imports at Sum- merside during May were of the value of $21,026, and the duty paid was $4,506.02. So that the excess of this year amounts to: Value of yoods, $7,057, ; duty, $1,248.34. As for the May exports from Summerside, they exhibit a gratifying increase of $9,808, —the export ef May last year being valued at $32,688, and this year 42,496. The difference is accounted for by the two steamers which loaded at Summerside by Capt. Richards and R. T. Holman, res- peetively, with potatees for the British market. ‘his fact shews the value to a eommunity of enterprising merchants,

Untruthfal Reports.

THe untruthful reports recently set afloat by the Toronto Globe and the Ottawa Free Press, regarding the Minister of Marine and Fisheries, have resulted in the usual The Minister has been benefitted rather than injured by them. Other papers have shown how erroneous the statements were. Thetruth is known; and the peo- ple of the Upper Provinces are only the more disgusted with the party hacks, who, in the hope of damaging the Government, gave publicity to falsehoods of the grossest kind. Mr. Pope has, doubtless—like other smen—his faults and weaknesses. But he has given proof ef the possession of sterling qualities, and misrepresentation don’t {do

Crop Prospects.

NorwitustanpIne the lateness of the spring there are in this Province, at this date, prospects ef a very good crop. There wiil, almest certainly, be an extraordinary yield of hay. The meadows were not in- jured by the frost of last winter, and at present the grass is of more than average luxuriance. We may report, with certainty, that the acreage under wheat is larger than ever it has been here; while of oat~, po- tatoes, etc., there is no lack. If favored by the weather and the markets, our farm- ers will prosper this year.

Some Penitentiary Statistics.

‘THERE are six penitentiaries in Canada— viz., Kingsten, Halifax, St. John, St. Vin- cent de Paul, British Columbia, Manitoba. Last year the number of convicts was 1374 ; and the gross expenditure in connection with them was $307,962.10, or about $225

each. The educational statistics show as fol-

Supreme Court, Prince County.

Summersipe, June Ll,

Supreme Court is still in session here. The appeal cases are now being argued. There were quite a number on the docket, but many were dismissed fer want of legal notice to the respondent. It is expected the term willend early te-morrew.

A verdict was found for the defendant, by the jury, this morning, in the case ef McCarvill vs. Fitzgerald. Reid vs. Cahill was called this forenoon. This was an action on account, and was settled before proceeding further. The Jast case befure the jury was Crockett +s. Robinsen,—an action te recever an instalment of the purchase money in an agreement between the parties for the sale of certain lands. A verdict was found for the plaintiff for the amount of the instalment and interest.

For the past fifteen years Philadelphia has been the seat of a number of medical colleges that flooded the country with bogus diplomas. ‘The Legislature tried to sup- press the institutions but failed and they have been run on legal charters. Six months ago the city editor of the Record called the attention of the Attorney Gen- eral to these concerns. The State had no evidence and the Attorney General no money with which to proceed. The Mecord advanced the funds upon a premise of reimbursement by the Legislature. A few days ago the matter culminated in preceed- ings that wipe out five begus medical col- leges, and in the arrest of John Buchanan, Dean of the American University, Phila- delphia, and the Electic Medical College of Pennsylvania ; he was also President of the National Eclectic Medical Association, which issued diplomas, and under the alias of James Murphy, D. D., he acted as Dean of the concern, issuing diplomas, at the Livingston University of America. Chas. Polk and John Siggins, members of the faculty, were also arrested. Six others ef the faculty are still at large. The evidence against the prisoners was secured by tecord’s city editor, who, under assumed names, got three medical diplomas for $75, and five degrees, viz., twe of Doctor of Medicine, one of Doctor of Divinity, one of Doctor of Laws, and one of Doctor of Civil Laws, for $150. Half a ton of bogus diplomas were captured im Buchanan’s place, with a mass of correspendence.

A little daughter of Mr. Jaines Clayton, of Nashwaak, N. B., was instantly killed on the 10th by a loaded wagon running over her. ‘The team belonged to her father.

Arrangements are being made at Peters- bore, Ont., te secure the services of a scien- tific lecturer from New York te deliver an address upon the modern improvements in the manufacture of butter and cheese.

Mr. Wills, an Immigration Agent at Ottawa states that the 450 immigrants who arrived at Quebec by the ‘‘Polynesian,” passed west on the 10th, having been en- gaged to work on the Pacitic Railway at $1.50 and $1.74 per day.

The Princess Louise and Prince Leopeld are expected to get back to Quebec to-day. Prince Leopold will return to England in July. He had desired to see more of the United States, and intended at first to go as far as San Francisco, but the Queen requires his presence, as he is of great service to her.

Emigration returns from the Mersey for May, show that 45 ships with 22,127 pas- sengers, sailed for the United States, thir- teen with 3,907 passengers to British North America ; total number of emigrants, 29,- 992, of whom 7,926 were English, 6,330 Irish, 276 Scotch, and the remainder for- eigners. As compared with May of last year, there is the enormous increase of 12,- 934.

The Lerd Mayor of Dublin has telegraph- ed to the Mayor ef every town in the United States and Canada as follows :— ‘* | regret to say, funds are still needed for the relief of the distress in Ireland. In many districts the pinch is now equal te that of any previeus time. The distress is much felt by small farmers, who dread workhouse relief, but can get nothing else until the crops come.”

| The New York Sun (Independent) thanks ‘God that Grant was not neminated, but Speaking of Garfield in connection with the ‘Credit Mebilier business, says: ‘* A per- jurer, ora man who attempts subornation of perjury, is not fit to be President.” The ‘Sun contains an interview with General Belknap, who says that Garfield is the most corrupt man in America, and weuld steal ‘* Heaven’s livery to serve the Devil in.”
