But the frogs are-not destined for the dinner plate. or flshermen's bait boxes. They're headed for la.orItones In the United States and Canada. Scientists have added me lively frog to the ranks of mice and guinea pigs as ideal animals for medical research.

Manitobans have been quick to take advantage of the demand. They are supplying frogs to I firm of buyers which pays 18 cents I pound, but it takes I lot of the smaller ones to make up

Frogs purchased in this country are shipped to American distribu- tors who sort them according to species and size. and supply them to various institutions. Many of the frogs find their way back to Canadian universities.

G. T. Jonasson, a frog expert with the purchasing firm-K6)" stone Fisheries-said frogs must meet certain speci ications if they are to be used in research labor- atories. They should be at least 2'.-S inches in length. not counting the legs, and of the green grass variety.

Most of the frogs come from the shores of Lake vfinmpeg. Dealers buy them from the local catchers and ship them to win- nipeg in quantity. The largest shipment. 1.200 pounds. came from I dealer in Amaranth. Man. About 40,000 frogs are received Inch week.

The frogs then are packed in special crates for shipment to the United States.
