In submitting an article for the con- sideration of the people of the United Siates and Dominion of Canada at this epidemic crises it is important for the people, and incumbent upon Me, that the writer should be known. First, he should introducedimself; second, his subject ; third the remedy ; fourth, the testimony and evidence of the genuine- ness of what is put forth for considera- tion and adoption. My name appears at the close of this letter as voucher for the written statements and my ex-

perience. [ studied medicine in Bos- ton, in 1833, 183¢ and 1835, Since then, with a diploma from Bowdoin

Coliege and a membership of the Massa- chusetts Medical Society, I have been familiar with the treatment of small- pox, have read and reflected upon its treatment for fifty years,

More than twenty years ago Major Jobn Lane (a romantic gentleman) lived among the Indians of Nova Scotia, and from them learned a specific for smallpox—a_ preventive—before the fever, a specific after the symptoms of fever, after the eruptions, and preven- tions of pit marke. The remedy is veget- abie, and known in the list of plants or herbs as sarracenia, purpurea, side saddle flower, pitcher plant, fly trap, huotsman’s cup and other names. The root is the best, but the leaves are said to possess the same properties in a less degree ; of the root a piece of the size of a chesnut grated or bruised fine, or leaves enough to fill a wine glass, steep- ed in a pint of water and drank at four doses aday, is an ordinary quantily. The same dose may be used as « preven- tive, for persons exposed, also when the fever is manifest-—the rash ont or the pustules visibly filling and no pit marks are left.

Dr. Morris, of Halifax, N. S.,embrac- ed, adopted, and proved it to be a speci- fic in prevention and all scages of the disease whee manifested. ‘The medical men of Halifax,as in cases of discovery in medicine or science, opposed him, but he, true to conviction and duty, tried it on land and sea, and obtained many certificates from patients, and finally a lesding paper published them and vouched for their truth. I had those papers with certificates at that date. Any person can getthe remedy at the apothecary’s and act as doctor.
