Now the City Fathers ciscovered that it would not be pradent ou their part to let the whole property known as Pownal Wharf, and a question, “Whaat portion could be sately and legally leased and what portion could not?’ arose. A meeting to decide this matter was held on Tuesday evening, and a resolution was carried to the effect fhat the Recorder be requested to give his written opinion, and the opinion of other legal yentiemen,on the selling or leasing of Powual wharf: and to define what portion of it can be lewally leased or sold. Had the Aryts editor known the facts he would not have penned the article in question, The facts are that the pew in St. Paul's Church is the bona fide property of the Gov ernment, and as such is not subject to annual assessment paid by pewholders in that Church. As (jovernment property, it is oc. casionally occupied by the Lieut. Governor for gthe time being, and any represeuta- tives of Her Majesty who may from time to time attend di vineservice inSt. Paul’s Church.
