The "point" of this hand was to establish the diamonds as quickly as possible, and if the diamond finesse lost, it would lose to West. That de- fender, after winning with the diamond king, could not make a damaging return - South would still have protection in spades, in his remaining Q-10, and would have plenty of tricks without a second spade trick.
