Winter was almost over, but there was still snow and "me every- where. It was difficult to believe zhat Sweet Mistress Svfllltt was al- ready on her way up from the Land-of-always-Summer. Winter had been long and hard, and it still was hard for most folks,

However, the cold and the snow and the ice didn't prevent. Hooty the Great Horned Owl and Mrs. Hooty from planning to set up house-keeping. 'Ihey are the first of all the feathered folks to begin iousekeeping each year,'a.nd they do not wait for the arrival of sweet Mistress Spring to do it.

This year they had taken P0!- session of the very good nest at Blscky the Grow and Mrs. Bl Y had built the year before, and had planned to use again this year. Mrs. Hooty decided that it was just the: nest they wanted. They didn't ask the Crows if they were wi.iii:ng to-give up their nest. No, sir. they didn't do anything of the kind. They simply took posseuion, and that was that. The very first day they decided on taking the nest there was s snowstorm. Mrs. Hooty didn't want that nest filled with snow Ieain, so we simply settled in that nest. and stayed right there all throush the storm. The next morning. after the storm was over. she got up and shook herself. There was the nest as dry inside as if there had been no storm at all.

Hooty and Mrs. I-footy added a few sticks to the nest, and Mrs. Hooty fixed the inside to suit her better. That was all that was done. Nothing more was necessary. Mrs. Hooty spent all her spare time in the nut, or fussing with it. I-footy wasn't much interwted. If Mrs. Hooty Was saaisifled that was all that mattered to him. He was more interested in getting some- thing to eat. Getting a dinner was real work these days, and he spent most or the time he was awake in hunting.

This particular night Booty had had poor luck. He had hunited all night long. It was discouriiglnsz. It was a cold night. It was such a cold night that it was hard indeed to believe that Mistress spring had even started up from the Sunny South. When Hooty came in sight of the nest Mrs. Hooty was still on it. She saw him coming and left the nest. She sat beside it and waited for I-footy to join her. Hooty saw at once that she was excited.

"What are you so excited about?" he asked. as he perched beside her.

"It must be that you've been hunting and had good luck.” said Booty, looking around to see if there was anything left for him.

"No," replied Mrs. Hooty. "I haven't been hunting at all, but I'm going right away just to celebrate."

I-Iooty looked puzzled. "What are you going to celebrate?" he asked.

"You haven't even looked in the nest." said Mrs. Hooty.

"Why should I?" asked Hooty.

"Look and see!” retorted Mrs. I-footy.

Hooty turned his head and look- ed. "30, that's it!" he exclaimed.

"'Ilhat's it," replied Mrs. Hooty very proudly as she looked down in the nest. In it was an almost mund white egg, the first agyz of the year for anyone in that neighborhood. It really was some- thing to celebrate. Here it was. still winter, with snow and ice everywliere around, and an egg, the first egg of the year. was in her nest. Do you wonder she want- ed to celebrate? The first egg is always something to celelxmle.

She didn't know it. but she was really celebrating another dav.. She was celebrating a real birth- day. You see, she had laid that first My rm Washin-;ton's Birth- day. The baby that would hatch
