INDY LENDS SUPPORT by Chris McCarron (CONDOMS?)

Recently a group of students from Montague High School collected signatures in a petition asking for the installation of condom machines in high school wash- rooms. About three hundred names appeared in the petition. Students presented their petition to the Unit 4 School Board on Jan. 7 1992. The issue of install- ing condom machines in high school washrooms is tightly contested. Forexample, Superintendent of Unit 4, Dr. Phil Lake stated that he endorsed the students’ suggestion, while a local doctor stated that he did not believe that condom machines are the answer. The Unit 4 School Board decides the issue and eventually the School Board decided against installing condom machines in high school wash- rooms.

On Jan 6/92 the Island New Democratic Youth an- nounced their support for condom vending machines. Lobbying efforts by New Democratic youth in BC and Ontario were successful in that they resulted on the establishment of family living courses and condom vending machines in some high school washrooms. ‘INDY (Island Democratic Youth) has brought forth a resolution tothe PEI NDP asking the party to sup- port Montague Regional High School students in their request forcondom machines, and to call for im- proved sex education courses in PEI high schools.’’ The provincial NDP responded and came out in favour of the INDY resolution. The NDP had a debate over the issue and in the end p[arty leader, Larry Duchesne announced that the NDP believes that condom dis- pensers should be placed in PEI schools. Mr. Duchesne admitted that his party’s decision may not be a popular decision but the NDP must take a stand on all issues.
