The “Times,” in its leading article this morning, comments on a despateli from a St. Petersburg correspondent, in which it is stated that our issue out of the present complications consists in undoing much of Russia’s work, giving the rest a European instead of a specifically Russian character ; that another consists in what is called the pringiple of equivalents or compensation to the powers for Russia's acquisition, and that the latter solution is what Russia de sires, While Great Britain seems resolved to insist upon the former article, says, “It is the partition of Turkey that Russia desires now. It was her partition she desired at the time of the Crimean war; against such a policy we contended then, and are contend- ing now.” =e

Referring to the Italian proposition that England should state her views, the ‘“Times” also says it would be futile and inconsistent with our position to propose any scheme un- til the main principle of European control has been conceded, without which no scheme could acquire validity or sanction.

A cyclone ov tornado has for several days been moving through the West and South, levelling everything ia its path, Yesterday it visited a section of Georgia, Wheeling, West Virginia, Western Canada, Tennessee, Warren and other places, doing great dam- age to property and injuring several people. At Wheeling two men, hailing from Boston, were killed. Its path is a mile and a half wide in Tennessee and 400 yards in Geor- gia. in both of these States many churches, depots and other large buildings, besides dwellings and trees, have been prostrated, many mules and horses have been killed, and many persons injured, The damage is very great.

William James Spence and James Irwin, found guilty, at the Criminal Assizes, of shocting with intent to do grievous bodily harm in the late party riots in this city, were each sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. Michael Cooney received two years only, his case not being so aggravated as the others.

A capias for $22,000 was issued to-day for BE. H. Goff, President of the Montreal, Portland and Boston Railway, at the suit of the Canada Agricultural Insurance Com- pay. Goff has got out of the way, and is supposed to have crossed the line. .

A party affray between Orange Young Britons and Catholic Unionists occurred to- night in Griflintown, the Irish quarter of the city, which is almost certain to result in the death of James Harney, a young Irish Oatholic, who was fatagly shot in the region of the heart by the leader, it is alleged, of an-Orange Briton’s band named Russell. The encounter did not !sst long and tho shgoting is represented as a very cold-blood-

The ‘* Citizen” of this evening states that Sir John Macdonald has given instruc- tions to his lawyers to lay a criminal in‘or- mation against Mr. Geo. Brown for the in- famous slanders respecting himself contain- ed in a recent article in the ‘‘ Globe.” The conduct of that paper in endeavering to give the colour of truth to its first mis- statements by copying extracts from other papers in the face of the emphatic denials made in Parliament, is an aggravation of the libel.
