Most mink sales that we watch show a alight 5% to"10% improve- ment in plies for ranch mink, with wild mink very strong, silverblu much easier than last year and Blue llirost away down. We have been queltioning quite a number of furmen as to reason why wild mink command such a. premium over ranch mink. They say the pelts are better furred and the skins are tougher and tan better. That isJust as true of c-ur wild mink in this couri- iry in relation to our ranch mink. It appears to us that there is a possibility that the mink ranoh- ers pelt too early and that if, they could carry their mink until the latter pert of December the skins would be much more m-a- ture and stand the tanning pro- cess as well as the wfld mink.

We have noticed that diver fox pelted i-n November as a. rule do not have skins or hides nearly as tough as those pelted well on in December, so we endeavour to commence peitirfl, not in Novem- beraswedidmaaiyyesxsagqbut along about the first or second neck in December‘, finishing up towards the latter part of the month for the late April and early May pups. We were delighted to have a letter from our friend Ollie Mc- Neill, Fort Qu’Appeile, Sask. Ollie is still ranching a large number of foam and mink. l-lia son John is also managing a large ranch in Colorado. Ollie has great faith in the white faces and is also a. strong believer in pearl platinums. His pearls are the Cherry variety, a type made fum- ous by Mrs.‘ Cherry, who bred them in Colorado. They are con- siderably different from our pearls and good specimens are really very beautiful. Ollie sent us some snaps of white faces iaken at his ranch last f that are really classy. It will be re- m ‘ ed that some years ago m Bros. in quest of high- caass white marked foxes, visit- ed Ollie and purchased fifty and took an option on others for the following year. Ollie certainly put the white faces on the map, not only in Canada but in Norway, Sweden and the United Sta/tea. I have here a Bible. not n real Coverdale, but an exact replica, which I brought from England just 39 years ago In order to further my knowledge of the Scrip- tures I later determined to com- pare it, word for word with the "Authorized Version" of King James. This reading began in Dec. 1934, and finished in July i941: a long time, but partly taken up with other work. The Coverdaie had wide margins to the pages and these are now filled with pencil In the course of the search I found several errors in the Auth- crized Version. which was printed at Racine, Wisconsin. (In the old Gays the publisher would have been heavily fined for carelessness). l nced only mention three. A Housing Scheme

There is a housing shortage in most countries juat now, and the cost of materials and labor is ao great that comparatively few are able to build a house of their own. The Tuskegee Institute has been conducting a research "which may solve the housing problem for many rural families all over the contin- ent." and its conclusions are given in some detail in the Farmer's Magazine (Toronto) of January. 1949.

The Institute had in mind those southern farmers (in Alabama) who lived in dilapidated wooden shacks. and had very little money. but had considerable time, to in- vest in home building. The idea was to enable such a man to build his own four-roamed bungalow, 30 feet by 27 feet. by his own exer- tions. at a cash outlay of one thousand dollars. (If his neighbors co-operaie, of course the time will be shortened). Installation of n pump and plumbing would coat about $400 more.

The investigating group rejected wood and rammed earth, etc., for the walls, and turned to cement blocks. A most ingenious method of laying them gave a hollow wall, with a well-provided insulation, "and it saved cement." The four rooms are: n living room, l7 ft. 6 inches by 14 feel; a kitchen and two bedrooms all 11.6 ft. by 11.6 feet. There is also a small bath room, and a “heater space."
