Mr. Phil Carrol, tonneriy of Shipegon, N. B., and now man- ager of Hutt Brothers, described how the entire economy of sev- eral New Brunswick towns was changed following the establish- ment of frozen food plants. Mr. Carrol, who has had ‘con- siderable experience in the fish- ing industry in the ~Maritimes, presented figures on the freezing and storage capacity required and the volume of fish that could be expected in West Prince. From a million pounds the first year a plant operated in the tom of Caraquet the catch rose to eighteen million fifteen years later. Approximately 40 to 50 people would be required to operate a plant of sufficient size to handle all groundfish landed in the area from Conway around North Cape and down the south side to West Point. It was generally agreed by those present that a plant of this kind would materially benefit the people of West Prince County and that the nexlt move would be the formation of a company to get the project underway. Among those taking an active part in discussing the frozen food plant were Myrl Matthews, president Alberton Fisheries Ltd; J. B. Myrick, of the firm of Myrick and McIntosh, Tig-nish; Wilson Shea, manager of Tignish Fisheries and Harvey Hutt, manager of Alberton Fisheries.
S’Side Trade Board Wires MP’s Protest
SUMMERSLDE — Hon. Angus MacLean. minister" of fisheries. and Dr. Orville Phillips, M.P., for Prince, have been sent tele- grams in which the Summerside Board of Trade strongly protest the possibility of a 17 per cent hike in freight rates.
The Board sent the telegram after a special meeting held over the weekend.
Following is the text: “Horizontal increase freight rates highly discriminatory this province. Estimate total cost to provide two million dollars out of total increased revenue re- quired by railways.
“Proportiona-te cost per capita approximately six times Cana- dian average.
"Further inflation resulting from increase will have serious effect Canadian economy with no ultimate benefit to anyone.
“This board will approve strong stand by government in conformity with its expressed policy.”
Youth Club Has Sat. Meeting
SUMMERSIDE — The regular meeting of the K. of C. Youth Club was held on Saturday.
Anne Arsenault and Jimmy Roxan of the cultural committee presented several arguments on steady dating and following this the chaplain spoke on that sub~ ject. The various points were discussed in small groups and a short review was given on the conclusion drawn. The social evening of singing and dancing followed this.

SUMMERSIDE BUREAU OF THE GUARDIAN Seven crown witnesses gave eVldence yesterday in the trial of Gerald William DelsRoches of Toronto, formerly of Day’s Cor- ner, charged with break, entry and theft of a safe and $60 in cash fram the store of . P. Gaudet in Richmond on September 8th, which began in Supreme Court, Summerside before Mr. Justice J. Tweedy.

Constable James H. Maloney, one of the investigating officers, related how he patrolled to the Gaudet store in Richmond on the morning of September 8th as the result of a phone call accompani~ ed by Constable P. Mailman. He told of finding a window at the rear of the store broken and also of a broken door and framework at the back of the Building.
Constable Maloney testified that after carrying out the investiga— tion at the store he proceeded to- Day's Corner to the DesRoches property (owned by the accused’s father) where he saw a 1956, two- tone blue, Dodge in the yard.
The witness said that the win- dows in the dwelling were board- ed up, as was the verandah, ex- cept for three boards which were not in place. He stated he went in through the open portion of the verandah and. found the accused lying on a cot in the kitchen, while Lawrence Emmett Powers Toronto who is also facing trial on the same charge was lying on a mattress. 0N VACATION
He said DesRoches told him the property belonged to his father and that he (DesRoclhes) was on vacation.
Constable Maloney testified he returned to Richmond and about one hour later came back to Day's Comer. He stated the 1956 twodone Dodge car was gone as was DesRoches. but Powers was still there. The witness said he returned to Richmond and about Summerside about 11.45 a.m. and the accused was there.
He stated he asked the accused
for the keys to the car he was driving, (the 1956 Dodge seen earlier at Day’s Corner) and re- ceived them. after which he went out to where the car was parked on Central Street in front of the RCMP office, and locked the trunk and doors of the ve- hicle. Later in the afternoon he said, he drove the car into the RCMP garage in the federal building where Sgt. T.J. Keefe, officer in charge, Cnst. Eric Tedztbrd and himself examined the car.
He related the articles that were found in the trunk, which in- cluded a large piece of plastic, a plea of canvas, three pieces of hardwood with circular cutaways, cold chisel and two pice's of two by four, nailed together.
He said he rteu-rned to the RCMP office and arrested. DesRoches. PRESENTS RECEIPT
He presented a duplicate copy of the receipt listing the contents of items taken from DesRoches when he was arrested. He stated the accused had $27.98 cents on him made up of bills, three quar- ters, eight dimes, eight nickels and three penalties.
Constable Maloney stated that on October 22th he patrolled to Allen Road where the safe had been found by Norman Cameron of Summerside in which were l'edgers and a small oiusel. He concluded his evidence telling of

Staff Sgt. W. W. Sutherland of the crime detection laboratory told or receiving the articles from Constable Maloney before which he told the court he specialized in mlsoroscopic examination of metals.
He toldof thepry marks around the safe door as well as cuts and tears, but stated, under cross examination that there was no evidence that cold chisel or small chisel had been used on the door of the safe.
Other witnesses were Mrs. J .P. Gaudet, wife of the late owner of the store, store manager Everett Cameron, Mrs. Edmund Mac- Leod, Day’s Corner, who lives near the DesRoches property, Mrs. Myra Cannon, who operates a canteen on the Miscouche Flats and who received some money in coins from llhe accused for art- icles he had purchased, and Con- stable M. Bowles, Sumersl'de RCMP who saw the 1956 Dodge parked on Water Street on the morning of September 8th and who escorted the accused to the RCMP office in the federal build- ing. The trial will continue this morning at 10.30.

the Excise Act, continued at Sum- merside last night before Magis- trate RS. Hinton, with the ac- cused represented by J. O. C. Campbell, Q. C., and George Mc- Mahon as crown counsel.
The first witness, Cnst. Earl Elliott of the Summerside RCMP Detachment, described his part in police investigation of a discovery of a quantity of pint and gallon bottles of moonshine seized by RCMP at Summerslide on the early morning hours of August lst.

Summerside Girl Subiecl Of National Magazine Story
SUMMERSIDE — The accomp- lishments of a 29-year-old Sum- mersidc girl. Louise Dalzell, now Mrs. Morgan. has been noted in a feature story in the current is- sue of Chatelaine Magazine where she has been recognized as one of the top six of Canada’s 25 women who help direct $335 million.
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Dalzell, of Traveller’s Rest, near Sumnerside, Joyce began her career with the Sum- merside Journal Publishing Com- pany after attending school at New Arman and Summerside.
After employment with other Summerside firms including the law office of T.L. Linkletter, be- fore going to Quebec and Ontario where she later joined the Tor- onto investment houses of which former Prime Minister Arthur Meighen is chairman, and where she is secretary of three large investment trust companies and a director of one of them.
HOST OF FRIENDS
Joyce, who has a wide host of friends in the Summerside area, returns to her home each year on vacation, and her last visit was in August.
Married in March of this year, her husband is an engineer with a large Canadian aircraft firm.
In addition to her parents, the
charge of the RCMP identifica- tion branch at Charlottetown, de- scribed details of a fingerprint check he made on 364 pint bottles and 20 gallon jars which had been seized in the raid by the Sum- merside Detachment officers. Cnst. Humphrey also testified that in his opinion fingerprints from one bottle placed in evi- dence were identical with those of the accused.

lCPl—RCAF Air Marshal Roy Slcmon said Monday a manned interceptor in the RCAF is an “inescapable requirement for as long as we can see."
The d ep 11 ty commander of North American Air Defence headquarters here told a group of Canadian reporters that the supersonic jet Arrow interceptor Will have more speed, altitude, range and manoeuveralbility than the American supersonic F—106.
The Arrow would be the high- est perfonmance interceptor available in North America until the American F-108 is ready in five or six years.
No less than four times at the press conference, Air Marshal Slemon, former RCAF chief of staff, stressed the continuing need for manned in-terceiptors in the Canadian air defence system. On the first occasion, he brought up the subject himself.
TWO INTERPRETATIONS
There appeared two interpreta—
tions of Air Marshal Slemon's re- marks: Either he is preparing the way for a government an- nouncement in March that the Arrow will be ordered into lim- ited production; or he is so con.- vinced of the need of the Arrow in the RCAF tllat he is willing to lay ins job on the line to fight for the plane. Air Marshal Slemon and Gen. Earle Partridge of the United States Air,Force, NORAD com- mander. said that they have rec- ommended to the Canalian chiefs of staff that manned intenceptors be retained for a long time yet in the air defence system to counter the threat of manned bombers.

Air Marshal Slemon’s state- ment runs counter to that of P rim e Minister Diefenlbalker's last Sept. 23 in which he an- nounced that the government was deferring until March its decision on whether to order the Arrow into production.
Mr. Diefenlbaker said it ap- peared doubtful that manned in- tenceptors would have any useful role to play in air defence after 1961, the year in which the Arrow yvoruld come into squadron serv- ce.
Senior RCAlF officers are say- ing privately that cancellation of the Arrow program likely would jeopardize Canada’s position in NORAD.
If the Canadian government did away with manned interc‘eptors for the RCAF, Canada would: have only two bases of ground-to. air Bomarc guided missiles in 1901. This. they said, would raise the prospect of more American fighter squadrons being based in Canada-«there now is one at Har- mon Field, Mid, and another at Goose Bay, Labrador—and Can- ada having to relinquish its sen- ior positions in NORAD.
RICAF officers now hold down two of the seven top posts in NORAD although Canada contrib- utes only nine fighter squadrons. The U.S. contributes 60 squad- rons, 61 Nike missile battalions, 45 ships and some 170,000 of the 200,000 personnel under NORAD control.
Air Marshal Slemon said the air defence system is being pushed farther north as new radar stations are being built. At the moment, any bombers attack- ing North America from the polar regions could be intercepted

He said NORAD is not hard, pressed “at the moment" for more fighter bases in Canada be. cause the limiting factor was the number of radar stations avail- able to control the operations of the interceptors.
Gen. Partridge said the U.S. is trying to cut its defence budget. Consequently, there would be no desire on the part of the U.S. to build more fighter stations in Canada.
Air Marshal Slemon said “we need very long range manned in- tenceptors to carry out intercep- tions as far north as possible. The threat of manned or unmanned bombers confronts us for as long as we can see into the future.”

Asked whether he feels that Ca nadian CF-loo jets should carry U.S. atomic missiles, Air Marshal Simon said interceptors must be improved. Discussions were oc- curring or would occur between the Canadian and American gov. ernments on atomic weapons.
Gen. Partridge said the air de- fence system is far superior now to a year ago. Canada and the U.S. “can be defended well enough to survive and win a war.”
