OTTAWA (CP) — The meet- ing of the Canada-United States cabinet defence committee in Washington June 25 may mark another step in possible de mise of RCAF Air Defence Com- mand, informed sources say.

The main military purpose of the meeting. in Canadian eyes at least. will an assessment of the Russian bomber threat .gainst North America.

Informants said it is ex- pected the U.S. delegation, which has infinitely more sources of intelligence informa- tion than the Canadians. will find the bomber threat reduced in comparison with the long- range missile menace.

Such an assessment. sources said. would eventually result in a further reduction in RCAF Air Defence Command. possible to the point where only a few jet planes are kept for recon- naissance purposes.

RCAF Air Defence Corrlmand now is down to!“ operational jet interceptors in three squad- rons compared with 162 planes in nine squadrons in 1961. The number of radar stations in the Pinetree and Distant Early Warning chains have been re- duced and the Western half of the Mid-Canada Warning Line has been dismantled.
