Fugato Review

Fugato are no strangers to the stage lights at The Wave, or most other Charlottetown venues for that matter. However, despite their prevalence in the Charlottetown music scene, my first experience of the band was that of their first six track record entitled Grass Radio. Not really knowing what to expect, I gave the disc a spin. As the record moved on, I became more and more intrigued with the indefinable style. That being said, by creating your own musical identity the music can become fairly hit or miss.

The opening song, which I really enjoyed, encapsulated what I interpreted to be half reggae and half jazz. It made way for track two, which is reminiscent of some sort of mutated country shuffle which I wasn’t as sold on.

The album carries on with one surprise after the next and definitely includes more hits than misses. It’s all quite creative and conceivably fairly ambitious, but if you’re looking for a fresh, unprecedented sound than you need not look further than Grass Radio

their sound is a unique blend of reggae, funk, rock and bluegrass. It’s a strange mix, but interestingly it all seems to come together.

The production on the record is quite solid throughout, however the reverb is a bit much at points. With only 6 songs, Grass Radio is a borderline EP. However, fans aching for another hit of Fugato fans don’t have much longer as production on a ten track album slated for release later this year has already begun.

For the time being, however, you can purchase Grass Radio through links to Amazon that is made available under the merchandise portion of fugato.ca.

That all being said, on a scale from “TI” to “IMPECCABLE”, Grass Radio falls in at about an “IMPECCA”

Sam’s Town review

The Killers, a rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2002. They released their debut album in 2004, Hot Fuss, and have followed it up with the sophomore album Sam’s Town, released in 2006.

Their last album, Hot Fuss, was more of the revamped 80’s synthesizer sound while Sam’s Town, their new album, is full of drama and holds onto an old time saloon feel throughout the entire album.

With their first single, “When you were young,” a song that is catchy and seems to last forever but actually lasts only 3 minutes and forty seconds. There’s definitely that feeling of sitting down and listening to rock theatre. Unlike Hot Fuss which was a more high energy sound.

“Bones” is the latest single from the band, with the video for the song directed by Tim Burton, the man behind Corpse Bride and A Nightmare before Christmas. The album has a lot of catchy songs; a few that might stick with you, like “The River is Wild”; a great song with a poker name, everyone should play poker. Some of

the songs almost seem angst/ depressed, but when you think about the band and its show boater of a lead singer Brandon Flowers, it’s just too entertaining to think too much about their message.

The Killers have left behind their amazing synthesizer sound they thought to reinvent and have started into a more Bruce Springsteen, U2 and dramatic sound. The band has proven itself capable of only producing descent music in two styles. Almost too much style, some think with their bravado attitude and high profile spats with other bands, but it sells albums and this is one I would give 4 out of five stars, big stars! Like the ones we all used in elementary.
