In his report councillor Jenkins said in part: :"!"rom the state- ments of revenue and expenditures presented, it will be seen that we provided ior sinking fund purposes 361,997.47; paid intere'.t. on deben- tures s50,040.1f5 and Ink interest 811,520.03. I. total of 5123.57.65.

"This means that it takes about 75 percent of our tax assessments to provide carrying charges on bonded debt and bank overdraft.

"We are, however, in s happy position by owning our electric light plant, the revenue from which has provided about 60 percent of these carrying charges, while the water and sewerage department again this year showed results iavourable to last year.

"The net bonded debt 0! the town as at December 31st. 1954 is for 81,155,551. Durlngi1954. 8124,- 600 of our debentures were paid. In 1955 debentures will mature amounting to 345.500 and these are fully provided for in sinking iund and will be paidin full. . STREET REPORT

Councillor Andrew Perry. in his report as chairman oi the street committee, gave a. comprehensive report. of rebuilding. patching, gravclling, and other work done to streets, and also the construction and replacemeitoi sidewalks.storm sewers and catch basins. The re- port noted that 22 storm sewers had been built by using the brick from the smoke stack which was dismantled at the old pumping station. He said that 8122.000 had been spent on capital account for streets. The purchase of the new snow plow had been a good in- vestment last year.

FLUOBIDATION '

The matter of fluoridation is being studied by the committee. said Councillor Clark. and every opportunity is taken to advise the public and stimulate their inter- est in this scientific discovery.

Councillor Perry later expressed the opinion that ii any action were to be taken in regard to fluoridation oi the summers” water supply. a plebiscite should iirst be held to determine the wishes oi the citizens in this re- gsrd.

Councillor Clark explained the diiierence between clorins. which is added to the water to puriiy it. and which can be tested. and nu- orine. which is tasteless. and which is added to water to aid in den- tal decay.

He said that the latter method had been approved by both the Canadian Dental Society and the Canadian Medical Society.

Councillor James Mac.Dougal1 in his report as chairman oi the police committee, announced the retirement of Constable Joseph Linkletter due to illness. Constable Linkletter has been a member of summeraide Ponce Department since 1027.

Councillor Macncugali said that the appointment of Judge Darby to act as Judge oi the Juvenile court is now the subject oi cor- respondence with the. proper au- thorities. and it was hoped that something will be achieved in this respect in the near iuture.

He said that the installation oi a two-way radio system in the police car, pumper of the iire de- partment, and two of the electric light department trucks, with the main transmitting unit being lo- cated in the police oiiice, is ex-

Well Known Alberton Mon Passes Away

-Mr. H. Waldo Mstthe-WI. I well known citizen of Altieuon passed away last evenlnk at the age oi 70 years. Although he had been in ill-health for some months. death came swi-iitly sit the end.

A son oi the late Mr. and Mrs. John Matthews. as a young man he became engaged in the iishdnl industry. He enlisted in the ear- ly days or World War I and serv- ed with the Canadian Army over- seas.

Following his discharge at the cessation oi hostilities. he was a partner in Matthew Bros. Store but later returned to fishing. It was as postmaster that he be- came well known to all residents of the Aliberton area. For more than N years he served in this capacity with unfailing courtesy and outstanding citiciency. 1-is ro- eired less than two years ago.

He was known as an ardent sportsman and took an active in- terest in the Albeirtnn Branch ol the Canadian Legion which he helped to organise.

In the abattoir report. submitted by Councillor MacDougall. revenue was shown as 86.393. An increase over last year, however. there was still a deficit of s860,in this de- partment. of which 5414 was for painting and repairs. which includ- ed repainting the exterior and in- terior oi the building. During the year the cattle yard was paved with asphalt and some grading done around the property.

The number of animals slaught- ered during the year was: Cattle.

1647: canners, 39; veal. 45: sheep and lambs, 267; pork 63 (not slaughtered).

Had the rates been increased by l5 percent the revenue would have been about sl.000 more the report said. which would have been suf- ficent to show a small surplus.

Consideration of this matter by the new committee was recom- mended. as was also the purchase of an electric saw, for use at the abattoir.
