Dr. Lionel Stevenson, Zocloglst for Ontario, recommends the use of Denis powder to destroy warbles on the cettle’s backs. Dr. Stevenson is the‘ huthor of several valuable bulletins on the parasites of sheep and swine (which may be had at the Department of Agricul- ture gratis) and those who heard him during Farmer's Week, in the Prince of Wales College, will be inclined to give s11 credence to his utterances.

I had never heard of Dorris pow- der, so locked it up. 1t is the ground seeds of a. species of Deguclia, a climbing shrub related to the bean family. which is found in Guiana. the East indies and other places. American drug houses list it, and it is now being put up in quarter pound tins by veterinary supply stores. The powder is applied early in the sprlns to. kill the/grabs ill the lumps on the backs of cattle. If allowed to develope, these grubs escape by a large open- ing which materially lowers the value of the hide. besides ing the ani- inal much unnecessary suffering. The escaping grubs metarnorphose

and perpetuates the trouble.

Seeing that there is a. stage in the life of the warble fly when 1t is conl- pletely at man's mercy, it is evident out only rank carelessness is re- sponsible for the survival of the pest.

"Make hay while the sun shines.‘ for no other crop is so dependent on weather conditions. The ability to foretell these conditions, and experi- ence of the proper measures to meet them are two of the points essential to "success in hay-making.

Rain is a. source oi great loss in the nutrients of hay, because it leeches out the protein, m, carbo- hydrates and minerals, and increases the percentage of irldigestlble fibre. Washing dry clover in water resulted in the loss 0f half of the protein. The bleaching of hay by too much exposure to sunlight while not so in- jurious, usually lowers the price on the city markets. Red clover is cut just after bloom. when a. few heads have turned browli. Recent experimental work has shown that slightly better yields have been secured when cut in full bloom, si- though the quality may be slightly reduced. If the swath is left exposed to the sun the leaves dry faster than . the stalks, and drop ofl-in handling. By raking into windrow when the leaves are well wilted they will be re- tained, and will be sufficiently alive to draw moisture from the stalks. Heavy crops of clover must usually be tedded so that the wilting is more uniform.

When about half dry, the hay should be cured in tall narrow cocks. By keeping the centre high the rain will shed more effectively. A few hours before drawing in the 000158 shouidbs partially opened out to sl- low the escape of any moisture that may be inside, taking cars to shatter the leaves as little as possible. Twenty to twenty five pounds of salt should be incorporated with every ton of hay.
