Interscholastic Hockey Series Open This Week

It was announced last evening by tha Department of Physical Fit- ness that tha long-awaited play- downs for the Island Interscholas- tic hockey title and the Crockett Ivophy will get under way this week. Teams figuring in the ploy- downs will be Sourls and George- town from King's County, Surn- merslde and Tlgnish in Prince and tha old rivals, Queen Square and West Kent in Charlottetown.

Present amangements call for a series in each county with Char- lottetown winners meeting the King's County winners for the right to meet Prince County win- ners in home and home games for the Island title.,

Last year only three teams took part in the intcrscholastic bracket and it is interesting to 5pc this year's participants have increased to six in number. This would up- pear to point to the f-abt that the Island physical fitness programme is gradually forging ahead anti hockey fans and ex-stuzlents of these schools will certainly be tol- lowing these playdoivns with keen interest. ,

MONOPON. N. 3.. March I — (OP) — Monctcn Hawks becalna chamrpions of the Maritime Ben- ior Big Four Hockey League Sat.- urday nlght by defeating Trurc Bearcats 6-3 in the fifth game of a three-oif-fivc series for the title.

Two goals by Chick Charlton and another marker by veteran Sammy MoManus in the first period started Hawks off on thair series-clinching win after the teams had each won two games in the hard-fought series. Hawks now will meet Glace Bay Miners in the Maritime finals.

The game was almost a repeti- tion of last Saturday night's ser- ies opener which Hawks also won 6-3 except that last night Hawks faced a more defcmalned learn of Bearcats. Although the Monctonians were hever headed in the scoring. they were out- played by a wide margin in the first half of the second period, when only stellar nctmlnding by Hughie McDonald in Lhe Mone- ton goal and smart clearing by Hawks defencemen prevented Trurc from scoring.

For nearly five minutes Hawks were unable to break out of their own defensive zone as Truro ap- plied the pressure but when they finally did turn the tide in their favor Hawks dominated the play and the scoring for the ramalnder of the second period and the final frame.
