_ As expected, before Her Majesty's departure i Canada on Saturday it was anounced that on the advice of the Prime Minister, she had been graciously pleased to approve the ap- pointment of Major General George Vanier, CMG, DSO, as Governor General in succession to the Rt.. Hon. Vincent Massey. General Vanier will assume office on September 15. The Prime Minister, in making the an- nouncement, said it was hoped that en future occasions the matter of choosing governors general from oth- er Commonwealth countries would be considered.

General Vanier’s appointment will, we believe, give general satisfaction. He hag had a very distinguished car- eer as lawyer, soldier and diplomat, and no doubt will discharge his vice . regal duties with credit to himself

and to his country.

It is fitting that Hon. Mr. Mas- sey’s successor should be of French Canadian birth, but it is evident from the Prime Minister’s statement that
