This clause also provoked considerable liscussion.

Mr. McKinnon put in a strong plea for the tenants. He thought that if the bill passed in its present form the peace of the country would be disturbed—that the sheriff would be sent out and there would be eviction scenes such as occur in Ire- land. He did not think that tenants who had been in possession for twenty years should suffer. If a tenant was in possession
