OITAWA, May 7-~(0P) —Tne rising cost of hospitals in Canada was shown today in a return fab- led for A. M. Nicholson (CCF- MacKenzie) which disclosed that. the estimated expenditures for general public hospitals amine amounted ill 1945 t0 $74,059,491.

The greatest war in history end- ed in Europe two years ago to- day, (Thursday). _0n this anni- versary the world looks back over 24 troubled months to the spring day when peace --no matter what the form -came back to the war- ravsged continent.

For the first time since the thunder of Gerrnsnbombers cross- ing the Polish border on the morning of Sept. 1, 1989, sounded the deathkncil of an cra organiz- ed death and destruction came to a. halt in troubled Europe.

Japan still fought on. But the first enemy was vanquished.

For Canadians. the final sur- render of the German forces was just the final. official stamp on an accomplished fact. Their Ger- man adversaries had surrendered in northwest Europe May 5.

On May 5, 1945, Cot-Gen. Jo- hann Biaskowitz surrendered the German forces opposing the Ca- nadians in Holland and northwest Germany to Lit-Gen. Charles Foulkes. commander of the 1st. Canadian Corps.

And in a schoolhouse at Helms, France, as 12:41 a, m. GMT, May 7, CoL-Gen. Gustav Jodi surren- dered the German. forces uncon- ditionally. The surrender became effective at 10:01 GMT May B.

The war was over and the tre- mendous task of reconstruction could begin. a task the end of which is still not in sight. even as victory was obscured in the future during the war's dark days.
