Mr. i Mc Denald and the deceased were taking in| hay, and Mrs. McDonald remained on top of a load as it passed into the barn. She was by some means jammed between the cop of the barn door frame and the load of hay, and thus received injuries which caused her death sev- era! hours after the accident eccurred. Mr. Me|onald and family have the sympathy of the community in their sad affliction.

some, is larger than in any previous year,

It is estimated that over two thousand strangers are here, wit- nessing the gathering, which, despite the threatening weather, 1s a decided success. By yesterday evenings train from Tignish, over an hundred and fifty excursionists ar- rived, while the steamboat express brought as many more. The ‘St. Lawrence ar- rived the same evening with upwards ot two hundred excursionists from Pictou, Westville, New Glasgow, Stellerton, and other places in Neva Scotia. The train frem Georgetown this morning brought about two hundred excursienists, and the train frem Summerside centained a like number. The “‘ Meather Belle” had ever three hundred and tifty passengers from Orwell and the surrounding districts, while the ‘‘ Southport” from West River, brought about two hundred, The Prize list and all particulars will appear to-morrow. _ - _- - Eastern Notes.

Anoraern Leusrer Cannery.—-Mr. Haley of Souris, has Jately erected another Lob- ster cannery at Bay Fortune Harbor. This enterprise is looked upon with approval by the people of Foriune and surrounding country, as it will give employment te a large number of persons during the greater part of the year. The Order in Council, published in the last ‘* Canada Gazette, ex- tending the lobster fishing season to the 10th September, will, we believe, prove gen- erally acceptable to the lobster fishing in- terests in the Dominion.

Haymakinc.—Owing to late rainy wea- ther, haymaking in this part of the country has been almost a failure thus far. The greater part of the crop is still unsaved, if tiner weather dues not seon set in, che hay, as weil as wheat crop, wi'l we fear, be seriously damaged.

Pic-Nic; —Seurians had a very enjoyeble pic-nic at Abel’s Cape, Bay Fertune, on Friday last.

Sovers Tea Party.—The ladies of St. Mary’s Parish are already preparing for the Grand Tea which is te take place at Souris on the 18th inst. There is no denying the fact that Souris is famed for its successful Tea Parties and the coming one, will, with- eut deubt, afferd as much pleasure and pre- fit as any former one. The Railway fare frem Charlettetown and Return is lower than ever before, being only 90 cents with correspondingly low rates, all along the line We bespeak for the Souris Tea the patronage of the public.

Tue Wear Cror, in this section of the country looks well. Formerly farmers sowed too much oats and teo little wheat. For the last year ur two they have been en- deavoring to raise their own flour, and if wet weather dees not injare the wheat crep this year will be unusually good. Our far- mers are realizing that raising oats with which to purchase flour isa grand mistake. In an agricultural Prevince like ours, there is no reason why wheat eannot be raised as well as other graiys, as the crops this year are likely to abundantly prove.

Tak Fairsarrn Famity.—In spite of a heavy rain storm, a good-sized audience met in Market Hall last night to give the vocalists welcome, ‘he first part of the entertainment comprised the gengs of 1845, interspersed with humerous songs and old ballads. ‘This eccu- pied an heur and was well received. The second part presented a contrast at ence novel and highly interesting. A musical and dra- matic sketch, written by Mr. Fairbrairn, en- titled ‘‘The Rehearsal,” gives scope fer the display of beth musical and dramatic taleat— aud in this portiea of the entertainment the Misses Fairbaira eyinced ability of ne com- mon order. Miss Bessie Fairbairn’s rendition of ‘Casta Diva,” altheugh meant for bar- lesque, was a fine performance. Her ‘ Mrs. Jones’ Musical Party” is inimitable, and little Miss Polly, iu the ‘*Kerry Dance” and ‘‘Caller Herrin’” sang and danced chacm- ingly. Mrs, B. Roberts as ‘‘ Mrs. Gen. Tit- mouse” was excellent, and in the scene with Mr. Fairbairn as Colquheun, what with the Englishman's pomp and the Scotchman’s sim- plicity, it was very funny, We bespeak a full house for the Fairbairns te-night.

The re- putation already acquired by this eminent gentleman, wili surely induce a large number to hear him.
