This week we are devoting our feature article spot to the recently announced closing of Mann House. After all alcoholism, drug addiction, and treatment programs affect all of us in one way or another. This issue is a sensitive one within this community. In my opinion, it reduces to cost efficiency vs. people efficiency. See what you think, and in the future we will be sure to let you know who comes out the winner:

PEI’s Only Facility For Chemically Addicted Women Closed

Mann House was opened in 1986 by the incentive of two recovered women who saw the need for an extended program for chemically addicted women. Mann House was a private non-profit organization who at the beginning received funding from a Federal job training grant. been in contact with the Provincial Government on various occasions. Health and Social Services gave a predeemed rate of $34.00 a day for each woman, unless she had money of her own (which is decided through a needs assessment test). In the case that the woman did have her own money she had to pay for her own treatment. This is not the same for men who seek treatment and this policy may not change under ADPI.

Mann House offered a program that included: group counselling, one to one counselling, nutrition information, required A.A., N.A., or Women. for Sobriety meetings, Employment and Housing issues, an introduction to community, private and public agencies along with individuals who came in and speak to the women on issues pertaining to them. Mann House also offered volunteer work in the community as an opportunity to get out and meet people and to get some job training.

In the late summer of 1990 Mann House board made a recommendation to go under Addiction Services as a forth entity. Mr. Cheverie, Minister of Health and Social Services felt that this was not cost efficient for the number of women who have finished the program, but he also didn’t want to give the impression that his only concerned was about money.
