While Making Havoc of His Evidence on Direct Examination, Murphy Breaks Down and is Carriad Away in a Fit.

Orrawa, July 8.

In the Tarte-McGreevy investigation, Murphy’s cross examination was contin- ucd. His memory was very bad yesterday. He could remember nothing about the pay- ment of $10,000 to Sir Hector Langevin — neither time nor place nor anything about it; bat he swore that he paid it, No entry cau be found of any such payment, or of anything that looks like it. He was mak- ing fearial havoc of his evidence when he svddenly fellin a fit, and the committee adjourned. Murphy was confined to his bed last evening, and is reported very ill, and possibly may not attend the investiga- tion again for some time.

Spurgeon Dying.

Lonxpon, July 8.

Spurgeon, the great Baptist preacher, is dying. He was one of the most remark- able men of his day. Before he was eight- een years of age he became pastor of the small Baptist congregation at Waterbeach. In 1853 he was called to a Baptist chapel in Southwork, London, to which he attract- ed such crowds that the congregation was forced to remove first to Exeter Hall and then to Clancy Music Hall. In 1861 a new chapel, capable of seating about 6,000

persons, was corpleted in Newington Butts. Spurgeon founded a ministerial

college and built many chapels. His ser- mons have been printed weekly and pub- lished collectively in many volumes. He has also published ‘*The Saint and his Saviour,” ‘‘Gleanings Among the Sheaves,” ‘* Types and Emblems,” ‘* Lectures to my Students,” and other works.

Murderers Executed.

New York, July 8. Four murderers were executed by elec- tricity yesterday morning, at Sing Sing. There were no delays or accidents. The work was done instantly.

Hatrrax, July 7.—In Anticosti the fish- eries are reported the same as yesterday. The caplin being very good at south-west point and the cod fair, but no bait or fish at any other ports. The reports for Que- bee are: codfishing good at St. John’s River and Long Point, fair at Seven islands, Perce and Newport, and Point Launce. Very plentiful at St. John River, Long Point, and Seven Islands, Salmox very good at St. John River, and Merigon, and fair at Long Point. Herring poor at Seren Islands and Perce, but good at New- port point. In P. E. Island mackerel are reported taking hook freely along the north coast, from Mimiaigash round to Alberton; poor catches at Malpeque, but good at Souris. Cod and lobster fishing fair at Malpeque. Cod and herring fair at Souris. On Cape Breton coast reports are: cod, hake haddock, herring, mackerel fair at Port Hood, cod, herring and iobsters at Margaree, and cod at Mabou and Cheticamp. Herring at North Sydney, cod very good at L'Ardoise, and cod, herring and mackerel fairat Arichat. The net fishing was poor to-day ut St. Peter's, owing to @ thunder storm Jast night. ‘The schooner Victoria arrived there from eastern banks with fifty quintals of cod, All fisheries sre reported poor at Lunenburg, but the cod, herring and mackerel fishery are fair at Lockeport, and mackerel are reported schooling to-day off Barrington Bay. The cod fishery did very well Jast week at Caraquet and Ship-
