Having made these two plays. dec'arer should next cash the K-Q-J of hearts. discarding the A-K-Q of clubs!

When declarer now plays the jack of clubs. catching the ten, all of dummy’s clubs become good and South easily makes the rest of the tricks

However, let's suppose that declarer plavs the hand in less spectacular fashion. winning the first trick in his hand and attempting to run the diamonds. In such case he goes down one because it turfis out that West hes all four missing diamonds

The hand demonstrates an important principle of play. When dummy first appears, South can see that the contract is sure if the diamonds are di vided normally, that is, 22 or 31. His ‘one concern should therefore be a 4-0 break.

To protect against this possi- bility, South plays the hand in the manner advised. If the dia- monds turn out to be divided normally, no harm will come from the recommended plays.

But if, as in the actual case, the diamonds are badly distri- buted. Sguth gives himself an extra chance by relying on the club suit secondarily. The fact that the ten of clubs drops is neither more nor less than poetic justice
