Just Another Friday Night at The Barn, Just the Way I Like It

Friday night, downstairs at The Barn: tables and chairs, carpet- ing, warm atmosphere, very reason- ably priced beverages, and listening to a couple of PEI’s best bands. Isn’t this what it’s all about? The Barn is a great place to see concerts (the Panther Lounge, that is), and this Friday past, Windom Earle and Lending Jane packed ‘em in for an evening of great music.

Windom Earle filled the room with their riff-based brand of rock; attendance that evening peaked at around seventy (maybe eighty?) peo- ple. The Earle never disappoint, con- sistently serving up healthy servings of toe-tapping, head-bobbing grooves. [I could have more and bet- ter things about their performance that night had the band members themselves not taken my pen and paper].

Lending Jane took to the stage some time after midnight, confessing they hadn’t played for two hours straight in quite a while, and that they would have to dig deep into their repertoire to fill the time. After lower- ing everyone’s expectations with that caveat, they quickly went to work exceeding them with their trademark speed-jams. They complimented their original material with unique takes on such classics as “Sweet Emotion.”

Crush and Treble Charger is beyond me. PEI is lucky enough to be blessed with a wealth of very talented bands. So much so that the PEI government recently launched a 24-hour Internet radio station. The commercial-free radio stream plays nothing but PEI musicians all the time. The initiative displays information about each track (and changes as the song changes) including song title, band, and album details. After listening for an hour or two, one is given a very good idea of the size and scope of PEI’s musical talent.

The Barn has a lot of advan- tages over other local venues, not the least of which is location-when weather becomes more blustery, those of us living on or near campus would much rather the situation of The Barn than making transportation accommo- dations to get downtown. And also, as mentioned, The Barn is much cozier and a lot cheaper.

So, the upshot is, instead of having a “local artists’ month,” every month should be local artists’ month at the Barn. And may I be so bold as to suggest that booking need not be limited to standard rock bands only and could be extended, occasionally, to other genres; Celtic, say. However, let this not dissuade those in charge of booking from attempting to land Default, which The Barn’s electronic message board suggests is a possible future gig. They’re great!
