Two Stories of a Mutiny.

ASSASSINS COMMIT A MURDER IN THR SOUTH |

SEAS } Two terrib'e stories of mutiny and mur- «rin the South Sess were brought to San |} Francisco rec ently by the steamer Aus. tralia. One mutiny occurred on the whal- tng birk Willian Boylies, which resulted in the dangerous wounding «of the fourth mate Joe Bapti te, by « sailor named Carl Hen- dryk. Sxvof the crew came up on the steamer, while thirteep are in irons at Hon- olu'u. The other occurred on the Ameri- ean bark Hesper, which resulted in the death of the second mate, M. Fitzgerald. The Hesper reached Honolalu February 22nd. The captain brought information of « plot to k.ll him and four others, and their ives were only saved by the accidental dis- covery of the first murderous m ve on the part of the mutinous crews. The plan is alleged to have been hatched by Thomas Le Ciair, a ssilor, who shipped as a native of Norway, but it was afterwards learned that he was born in New York. LeClair’s alleged partners in crime were Herman Spsrf. Hans Hansen, Thomas Green and Edward Larsen. They picked out a dark might, and about 1030 o'chek LeClair murdered the second mate by striking him with a hatchet. The murderer lay in wait about amidsh ps, and when bis vietim came slong he struck him a blow on the back of the head with the sharp edge of a hatchet aud almost instantly killed him.

Sperf and Hansen wanted to throw the body overboard and then remove al] traces of crime by washing up the blood stains Leclair would not consent to this, and im- m-distely proposed that they go after the captain aad other inarked men and murder them alsc. His companions weakened and would not give their consent, and Leclair left them and wentafs. The two men then p cked up the body of the murdered man and threw it overboard. The next day the captain placed Leclair, Sparf and Hansen in icons, and thea changed his course and made for Tahaite, which he reached after & voyage of fourteen days. The mutineers confessed their crime,

The Stocy of a Novel.

Mr. Howells’ latest novel, ‘*The Coast of Bohemia,” now running throngh the peges of The Ladies’ Home Journal, was written in four different States. Mr. Howells began the novel at his father’s home ia Ohio last May, contiauelitin Boston in June; took it to the mountains of New Hampshire during the sammor aad worked at it; brought it to New York ard wrote a numbers of chapters there in October; took it tack again to Ohio in November, and finally finished it in New York last Decem- ber. And yet, deapite ali these changes of p aes of writing, the nevel turns out really to be the brightest piece of work that How- iis has done for a long time.
