WINNIPEJG, Aug. 21-—Menitoba‘s 700 sugar beet growers are opti- mistic that, given e dry Septem- htr, they will harvest a shooaooo crop this you.

They are all the more excited over the prospect because up to a few weeks ago the sugar beet sit- uation in the Province looked grim, with prospects of s crop failure imminent.

Today, however, after the warm. rainy weather of the last few weeks, the, beets have grown to good size, with only the sugar content to he decided. Normally it ranges around 16-17 per cent and if pternber is dry growers say the percentage will be high. A $1,000,000 crop this year, while not expected, would be only slight- ly better than last year's, at that, with the Manitobaris receiving al- most that. figure for the 07.800 tons harvested in 1948. The ever- age price paid then was $11 an acre.

This year's price has not been determined yet. but growers are hoping that it will follow the up- ward trend generally evident since i940. That your the producers re-

Extension of the sugar beet in- dustry has not yet reached the stage where the Dominion can consider itself self-sustaining in- sofar as the population's sugar demand is concerned. Last yeer the entire sugar industry in Can- ada processed only about 18 pcr cent of all the sugar used in the country.

A good crop throughout the beet Provinces this year could raise this percentage, farmers claim. In Manitoba they predict that the lndusuy. ct capacity. could pro- vide for 50 per cent of this Pro- vinces needs. with production for the Dominion reaching at least 25 per cent of the country's needs.
