The shearing came today. At Alderlea, where all farm-work is made to run in a neat succession, this chore usually dovetails with the affairs of the cropping. It may be undertaken on a cloudy. dampish morning without promise of field-work or again it may be taken up on an afternoon. when showers have put an end to the seeding. Of course to effect this nicely one must be in league with the weather. Even while the field cares are being continued happily. one must be able to read in sky. in wind, in sunset-and pond. that sign which reminds the shep- herds that now is their conven- ient season to return their flock dry-wooled from pasture to fold. it in the cessation of other duties they would like to come to the shearing. It was in their confer- ence at noon today when clouds were lowering threateningly, the

farmers shrugged shoulders and reckoned "we may as well get those sheep in." Accordingly,

shears were sharpened. the barn- floor swept, gates put up to shape their trail and confine them. and the flock of sheep and lamps brought from the field.

One woman had been advised of the event--she that without care of youngsters, is able at short notice to take up and roving com- mission required of her. As it turned out, Jeanie, small son asleep and she out about at her chickens or wood-getting, was also pressed into timely service. Our duty was to man ”those thar gates -when you see them hearing!" which of the number of these was not entirely clear until James presently approaching at his hard- ing called out louder and more implicit directions over the heads of the flock. We suppressed a smile and scuttled to our desig- nated post. The train from Flown!!! W Rome, a journey of about 101-11” hours. was the most modern we rode on in Italy and was electric. In Rome, as in many other Eur- opean cities, hotels send represen- tatives to meet the different trains with the hope of gettinl W51" nees. We were confronted with several of these individuals 'st the station, who thrust cards ln'0ll1' face and uttered, in loud voices, something which we didn't under- stand. These cards are printed in various languages and advertise the respective hotels.

As it was very hot when we ar- rived, we thought the simplest way out was to try one of these hotels; namely, the Albergo (Ho- tel) Alla, which, from the card. was supposed to be a modern ho- tel, near the sLation. etc. We were driven, for what seemed like miles, to an old building on the Via NEUOIIEIE. The Hotel was on the fourth floor of the building and as the elevator wasn't running clue to the shortage of powvcr (they told us) we had to walk up these four flights of stairs. This meant. on top of our taxi fare, paying another MP5?" to carry our bags up to the room. We were shown to a small, dirty room. which we had little choice but to accept. . V

when we were registering we were informed that it was a "Pen- sione" hotel, which means one must. eat two meals a day there. which is rather inconvenient when one is sightseeing and has no idea where he is going to be at meal time. As the manager un- derstood English well, we were not long in letting him know what we thought of his hotel.and that he had better revise his card advertising the place.

Although Rome is famous for being built on seven hills. these hills aren't distinctly noticeable. It is a dirty city, but very inter- esting as there are remains of many old buildings still standing which were built in the time of Christ.

After buying a Guide to Rome we proceeded to find our way to St. Paul's Basilica. The route we took was very long but took us through many places of interest. The first of these was the R0- man Forum. The original con- struction, built about 6 B.C. was completely destroyed or buried due to earthquakes, etc.. but dur- ing the 18th century all possible ruins were excavated. The re- mains of several temples still stand - among them the Temple of Caesar, built on the spot where the body of Caesar was burned and where Marc Anthony deliv- ered his famous speech.

At the approach to St. Paul's gate is the Pyramid of Caestius. 118 feet high. and covered with marble, built in imitation of the Egyptian pyramids. Near the pyramid, and surrounded by a high stone wall, is s protestant cemetery. in which are buried two famous English poets. Shelley and Keats. We noted particularly the inscription on Keats” tomb - "Here lies one whose name was writ in water." A very well pre- served part of the old Roman well. known as the "Aureliean Wsl-l" lies beyond the cemetery.

As we followed the Via Ostiense to St. Paul's, we had rather an interesting experience. Wanting a. place to rest our legs more than anything else, we stopped at I smell restaurant and thought it was clearly understood that we wanted coffee with milk, almost unheard of in Italy I believe. OPEN FACE RI-IUBARB PIE

1 2 pounds rhubarb. 9-inch un- ibaked pastry shell, 1 cup sugar. 2 xtabiespoons flour. 2 eggs, 1 tea- ispoon grated lemon rind, few ygrains salt.

1 Cut rhubarb in thin diagonal vslices; arrange in pastry shell. Best together sugar. flour. eggs, lemon rind and salt until thick and lemon colored; pour evenly over rhubarb. Bake in hot oven, 425 degrees F., fifteen minutes; reduce heat to moderate. 50 de- grees F.. continue baking about thirty minutes, or until rhubarb is tender and custard is set.

IIHUBARB FLUFF PIE

2 cups finely chopped rhubarb. ii cup sugar. it cup water, 1 table- spoon unflavored gelattne. Vt cup cold water, 2 egg whites. 1,4. cup sifted sugar. cup whipping cream. 1 tablespoon grated orange rind. 1 baked pie shell

Combine rhubarb, sugar, and water and cook until tenderr. Force through I coarse sieve. soften gelatine in cold water, add to the hot rhubarb sno chill until almost firm. Beat egg whites until frothy and add suglr gradually. heating until light snd fluffy. Fold into cold rhubarb mixture. Whip the cream until stiff and fold into the mixture with the grated orange rind. Turn into I baked pie shell and chili before servim.

Lilacs and honeysuckle are blooming, these are fragrant and colorful hardy shrubs. The old fashioned licacin purple or deep mauve and the white variety are' planted all over this garden and the fragrance is so grand it is difficult to come indoors to the necessary duties.

Two beautiful French Lilacs given to me by a gardener from another prrwince are now cover- ed with bloom and when we read of gardens of lilacs we know they must be something very lovely indeed. There are many new hybrids in colors of pink and gentian blue, with florets al- most two inches across.

Walt. Whitman writes of Lilacs in "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd". The lilac bush tall-growing with heart- shaped leaves of rich green. with many A pointed blossom rising delicate, with the perfume strong I love.

Nowhere does the lilac grow in such sweet scented clusters as in Scandinavia, where it is the emblem of strength and purity. and there are many lovely leg. ends of the lilac in that country. The lilac, which comes from Persia and retains the name it bears in that land (lllagi mean- ing flower. was carried to Eur- ope in the sixteenth century and brought to this country by the Puritans. It grows wild in south- ern Asia and southwestern Eur- ope, but with us. who have known it u prince's feather end duck's bills, and also as lsylock and blow-pipe tree, because pipe- stems were made from its smal- ler branches. it is a loved oc- cupant of the garden; and what's more beautiful than a lane of li-lacs in May, with heavy heads nodding over the walk and drip- ping dew and perfume? Though picked for May festivals it was introduced charily indoors be- cause of its purple coloring. The first white lilsc. is pointed out today in the churchyard of s hamlet in the Wye, in Hartford- shire. and now thanks to the hyvbrid-ists there are many new colors.
