encuureging to Canadian farmers intereste ed in pork raising and which ought to stimulate the farmers of this Province to produce hogs equal in point of quality to

those produced by Ontario. We quote the

letter in full:

Sir,—We havenreceived your favor of the 23rd. We do not ourselves deal in Lrish or Danisb bacon, but from our know ledge of the trade we know that Irish need not be taken into account in estimating the prospect for Cunadian meats. The trade in Irish bacon is rapidly diminishing and there seems more disposition to look to Canada and Denmark for supplies of hog produce to supplement the home pro- luction. Weare quite ata loss to sug gest any improvement that can be made in Canadian bacon. It gives genera! satis. faction; and while there is a prejudice in some quarters against anvthing that is not marked Danish, Canadian meat is quickly

forcing its way to the front on itsown particular merits. So long asthe Cana-

dians continue to send well fed, solid meat, such as they bave been sending lately, and covtinue tO py parti:uiar attention to evenness Of cutting and regular sizing (for weights that will sell in one district will not sell in another, and it isa great draw- back to have different sized sides in the Same box), there is no question but that “Canadixn meat will continue to give satisfaction in~—_ this country. They bave made their meat popular and created a demand for it which will increase each year, and we think that the :ncrease will be to the detriment of Danish bicon, which, however, continues to maintain the highest position here. Says She Get His Good Money, Then Refused to Marry Him,

THOMAS HOWARD HAS PRETTY MARY HYDE COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

Stratrorp, Sept. 26.—At the poli e court here a few days ago Thomas Howar?, a widower, charged Miss Mary Hyde, whom not long ago he was engaged to marry, wich the theft of $215. The story he told was thai shortly after their en- gagement he gave her $290, to put in the bank with some of her money, and on the Saturday before the Wednesday set for the wedding he gave her $15 to “pet sone things” to be marriedin. On the Sunday evening when be went to see her she had told bim that she liked ber father bett r than him, ane indefinitely postponed the marriage. but refused to return the $215. Then she left the room, aid after waiting an hour he had gone away.

He confided his troubles to a friend, and together they watched the rad to the station all right, to see that Mary did not getaway. About five o’clock in the mori ~ ing they roused the family and dem .nded the money again. The girl’s father told him he koew nothing of Mary’s eogage~ men'; that she was her own boss and he was a fool to give her the mnovey. When a-ked why she had acted as she had, she said Howard had insulted her. After several futile attempts to recover his money tie charge was laid.
