By the last mail we received the first and second num- bers of a neat little paper called Tun COLONiAL FARMER, devoted to the Agricultural Interests of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. It is published at Halifax, by Mr. R. Nugent, and is edited by Titus Smith, Esq. The work is issued monthly, is well printed, and the price is moderate. We have not bad time to peruse its contents; but judging from the notices we have seen of the publication, we are led to augur favourably for its suc- cess. The Editor says—

M. 81st Regt.—eldest son of the Hon. T. N, J efl'ery, of-this city—died at Tobago, of fever, a few days before the S. left the West Indies.

Being a resident in this Town, regret) observed the great inconvenience arising from the very little, or rather, at times, no light, at night, from the hours of8 till 10 o’clock, during which time many persons are obliged to walk homcwards from their respective avo— cations—especially when the moon for-bears to shed her beams on the inhabitants of this part ofthe Globe—I ain de- s'rousthat the evil should be remedied. I think there ought, and might be, with very little expense, a sufficient remedy for this. Suppose a small number (to begin with, until the he- nefit be derived,)'of Oil Lamps be obtained, at the voluntary expense of each inhabitant Of the Town, and one placed at different corners or places most suitable for the purpose. A boy might be hired to light these, and, of course, each person who subscribed to this could see if be discharged his duty both in lighting and extinguishing the same. 1 know ot‘no places more in want of this than the Market and other Squares, where (to the annoyance of the public at large) cattle are continually lying.

I trust there is as much spirit in the Charlottetown inha- bitants, to put this into action, as there has been to effect other purposes. -

He is to report direct to the commander of the forces in Canada, and not through the general officer at New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, who is of junior standing to him in the army—United Service Gaz.

G1” or PLATE.—-Mr. David M‘Gill, of Casseylands, hav- ing been for years of service to his Agricultural fi’iends in P. E. Island, by his skill in selecting the most improved im- plements of husbandry, the best seeds, roots, and divers other articles, it was resolved, at a meeting of the Central Agricultural Society, held in Charlottetown, on the 6th of January last, to present our townsman with some token of regard, to mark at once the gratitude of the Association and the high Sense its members entertain of “ services alike un- wearied and gratuitous.” In accordance with this resolu- tion, the Secretary, Mr. Macgowan, was instructed to coni- mi'ssion a handsome silver tea-set in London, consisting of teapot, cream jug, and sugar basin, with a capacious silver taukard superadded. The whole of these articles, which arri- ve‘d safe the other day, are richly yet tastefully chased and ornamented, and bear the following inscription :—“ Present- ed by the Central Agricultural Society 'of Prince Edward Island, British North America, to Mr. David M‘Gill, ofDum- fries, in testimony of the high sense they entertain oft-he valuable services rendered by him to that institution, 6th January, 1841.” That the gift is merited we have no doubt whatever, and therefore wish the recipient and his family long life and health to enjoy it.—-Dumfries Courier.
