PERTH (CP)—BruCe Kidd of Toronto and Dick Pound of Montreal mounted the victory rostrum in track and swimming respectively Saturday at the British Empire Games Australia took a stranglehold on the unofficial team champion- ship and Canada moved into third place behind England. ‘Kidd's stirring victory in the six-mile run——the crowd of 18.- 000 stood and cheered as he sprinted the last two laps—and Pound's upset win in the 110- yard freestyle swim went a long way toward wiping out the failure of Vancouver’s tempera- mental Harry Jerome in the 100-yard dash final.

Jerome. the only man in his- tory to share the world loo-yard and loo-metre records simultaii- eously. broke own physically and mentally at the halfway mark in the 100-yard final and finished sixth and last. SLOWER THAN JEROME

Serafino Antao of Kenya won the gold medal with a 9.5 clock- ing—3-10ths of a second slower than the world record Jerome equalled in the Canadian games trials last August.

But Kidd's victory undoubt- edly was the track triumph of the day.

The 19-year-old student in political science at the Univer- sity of Toronto shattered the games record with a time of 3 minutes, 26.6 seconds for the six miles while running the dis- tance competitively for only the third time In his life. The best Kidd has ever run the distance In is 28:09. .

Kidd said afterwards that he is definitely running in the three-mile Monday but hasn’t made up his mind about the mile and the marathon.

Kidd said the marathon to him is “a very slow jog" and he hopes to be the first Cana- dian to break the four-minute barrier in the mile
