Today’s Communists represent a highly conservative class in the U.S.S.R.: People with a big stake in the system, intent upon keep- ing' things as they are. To be a Communist in Russia now is to reach respectability, to have a foot on the success ladder. It is difficult to’ gain admission to the elite.

To this party and a nation with a growing middle class which de- fies the predictions of doctrinaire Marxism - Leninism, Khrushchev has had to make promises. Many men and women now make good incomes. Their money won't buy the consumer goods they want The goods are not there.
