Paddy the Beaver was matting his way up a strange brook. Pad- dy had been away frun home

Big River until he found anoth- er brook. Now he was makiu his way up that brook. it being a strange book to him be wan taking the greatest can. using his eyes and ears and nose to warn him of any danger. Already he had had one adventure with Buster Bear. 11Ien he had seen Yowier the Bobcat and had warn- ed Mrs. Lightfoot the Deer and her twin that they were in dan- gr. Paddy had not left the pool he was in when he saw Yowler un- til he was sure Yowier had gone away. He had had no more ad- ventures that day nor the next. Now he was where the brook was much smaller and there were fewer pools big enough for him to feel safe in. He had slept most of the day. Now as the Black Shadow: came t-reepitg through the Green Forest he star- ted on. He had gone uneasy. He stopped every few minutes to look and listen. He had seen nothing and heard nothing to make him think that danger was. near, but he couldn't get rid of that uneasy feeling.

Then for a little way he was tree of that feeling of un- easiness. But as he swam across another pool that feeling return- ed and it was stronger than ev- er. he shook his head. "I lust don't know what to do." said he. "This pool isn't big enough to stay in. I'm afraid to go a- head and I just can't go back. it is an uncomfortable I simply don't know what to do."
