Peutce Covat,.—This forenoon Daniel Mc- Callum was fined $10 or 20fdays for annoy- ing persons in their dwellings; George Essory was ined $5 and costs for disorderly driving on the streets; Richard Jones, seaman, wes fined $2 or 8 days for being drunk and incap- abie jast night; John Collins, caulker, was fined $5 and costs for aliowing his premises to remein in a dirty condition; aud Jobn Gormley and Mary McLellan for a similar offence were each fined $2.50 and costs. In imposing the fines in the three last-mentioned cases the Magistrate said that in future the fine in each similar case would not be less than $10, ae he was fully deterrained to rigidly enforce the by-law bearing upon euch, cases.

Mr. Swan’s Dismissal.

To the Editor of the Patriot .

S1n,—In your paper of Friday last you make some observations regarding the reasons which led to the late James Swan's dismissal from the Stock Farm, which are unjustifiable and incorrect.

The House of Assemb y was in session when Mr. Swan was dismissed and the chairman of the Board of Commissioners the Hon Peter Sinclair was asked by Mr. Shaw, M. P. P., for an explanation, but no reply was given. The same silence was observed by the Government and its organs until Mr. Swan’s death about four

weeks later, lf Mr. Swan had been guilty, as you say he was, of “ breach of orders,” ‘‘indiff rence in regard to his

position at the Farm” ‘‘and disregard of those 19 authoriy over him” it would have been quite easy and proper for Mr. Sinclair t» have given the ioforma iva to the publ c at the proper time and place, or for you, sir, to have given the alleged ty while Mr. Swan was living, posttion to defend himself.

The conduct of the Government and _ its orgaps in making charges against Mr. Swan after he is dead, which they did not dare to make whil» he was living, is, in my Opinion, cowerdly and contemptible, and | believe my views are shared in by not a few of the former supporters of the party in power.

Mr. Jsmes Swan worked on the Stock Farm for 23 years, under nine different governments, and during that long period bo imputation of any kind was ever mide against his character. He was dismissed several weeks ago, and atill ao allegation was made of vufficial misconduct on bis pari; but now when he is dead—the victim o harshness and injustice--the feelings of bis friends are outraged by unworthy iasinua- tions,

In conclusion, I may add my opinion that if the late Mr. Swan had consented to mislead the public regarding the age and breeding of the animsis imported by the present Government, he would not have been dismissed. I am, yours &c.,

Industrial Exhibition

The winter session of the Band of Hope in connection with Sc. Paul’s Church was brought to a close on Tuesday evening last by a very successful exhibition of the useful and fancy articles made by the children. The exhibition was held in St. Paul's Schoolroom. The very interesting programme consisted of vocal and instrumental music, recitations and dumb bell exercises. Re- freshments were also provided. Judge Fitzgerald distributed the prizes in the different departments as follows :

Fire at Sackvitte:—On Monday morn- ing some person attempted to fire the parish jail ai Sackville, but failed in the attempt. About midnight someone set fire to the skating rink and the building was totally destroyed. The fire was started in the pump house at the rear of the build- ing and got considerable headway before it was discovered. As there was no water supply the people stood by and watched it b irn.

In this city, on the lst June, after a linger- ing illness, Angus Currie, barber, aged 21 years, May his soul rest in peace.
